Job summary

Interpro Pipe + Steel Inc. in Calgary is seeking a Lab Technician to support quality control by preparing and testing samples, performing tensile, hardness, and impact tests, and maintaining lab equipment and records.

The role requires strong data entry, adherence to ASTM/API standards, and flexibility for a 24/7 production schedule. Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma, with bonus points for a materials/mechanical/welding engineering diploma and metallurgy or NDT training.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Diploma in materials / mechanical / welding engineering is an asset.
• Knowledge of ASTM and API testing requirements preferred.
• Academic training in metallography, metallurgy, heat treating, or NDT an asset.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and test samples for evaluation of product mechanical properties.
• Prepare and examine samples requiring metallographic evaluation.
• Safely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipment.
• Prepare and perform tensile tests on heat treated, welded, and upset tubing.
• Prepare and perform hardness tests on welded, quenched and tempered pipes.
• Prepare and perform impact tests as required.
• Follow procedures and record findings; communicate results to stakeholders.

This position is an integral part of the quality control process and in ensuring compliance and customer satisfaction. The Lab Technician prepares and tests samples for evaluation of product mechanical properties, prepares and examines samples requiring metallographic evaluation.Safely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipmentPrepare and perform tensile tests on heat treated pipe, as welded pipe, and upset tubingSafely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipmentPrepare and perform hardness tests on as welded pipe, quench and temper pipe, and as quenched pipePrepare and perform impact tests as requiredFollow detailed testing procedures and record findings as per documented guidelines, communicate results with appropriate stakeholders.Interpret weld quality based on metallographic results and communicate results to Mill Line Assist with maintenance, calibration and record keeping of all gauging equipment including the master gauge calibrations.Prepare and investigate sonic indications and imperfections to communicate results to sonic operatorsDetermine parameter changes in Heat Treat based on mechanical properties and microstructures and communicate resultsMaintain records and run files in a readily accessible form.
