Job summary

Interpro Pipe & Steel Inc. seeks a Lab Technician to support materials testing and metallurgical evaluation in our Calgary lab. You will prepare samples, run tensile, hardness and impact tests, and communicate weld quality results to Mill Line and stakeholders.

Role emphasizes safe operation of lab equipment, gauge maintenance, and meticulous record-keeping. A High School Diploma is required; a materials/mechanical/welding diploma is an asset, with apprenticeship opportunities.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Diploma in materials / mechanical / welding engineering is an asset.
  • Knowledge of ASTM and API testing requirements preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare samples and test them to evaluate mechanical properties.
  • Safely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipment.
  • Perform tensile tests on heat treated pipe, welded pipe, and upset tubing.
  • Perform hardness tests on various pipe types.
  • Conduct impact tests as required.

Job Description and Responsibilities
  • Lab Technician prepares and tests samples for evaluation of product mechanical properties, prepares and examines samples requiring metallographic evaluation.
  • Safely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipment
  • Prepare and perform tensile tests on heat treated pipe, as welded pipe, and upset tubing
  • Safely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipment
  • Prepare and perform hardness tests on as welded pipe, quench and temper pipe, and as quenched pipe
  • Prepare and perform impact tests as required
  • Follow detailed testing procedures and record findings as per documented guidelines, communicate results with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Interpret weld quality based on metallographic results and communicate results to Mill Line.
  • Assist with maintenance, calibration and record keeping of all gauging equipment including the master gauge calibrations.
  • Prepare and investigate sonic indications and imperfections to communicate results to sonic operators.
  • Determine parameter changes in Heat Treat based on mechanical properties and microstructures and communicate results.
  • Maintain records and run files in a readily accessible form.
  • Review and appropriately filing of inspection records.
  • Routine maintenance of lab equipment and housekeeping in lab area.
Requirements
