Job summary

University of Ottawa is seeking a Laboratory Support Technician to assist with the design, installation and maintenance of specialized lab equipment at the Main Campus. You will train teaching assistants and students, ensure safety compliance, and provide technical guidance on equipment use to support research activities.

The role requires a college diploma in natural or applied sciences, plus at least 1 year of experience in a teaching or research laboratory.

Qualifications

Knowledge of laboratory tools, equipment, instruments, materials, and hazards.
Knowledge of Health and Safety rules, regulations and University policies related to labs and equipment.
Experience providing technical support and advice to users for lab equipment.
Experience in designing, fabricating, assembling, building, testing and repairing lab equipment.
Experience in preparing and developing scientific experiments.

Responsibilities

Meet with clients to identify and analyze needs for special purpose lab equipment and materials.
Assist with design, assembly, installation, testing, maintenance and repair of lab equipment.
Analyze causes of equipment malfunctions and perform required repair actions under supervision.
Train and support teaching assistants and students in using lab equipment.
Provide health and safety oversight to ensure safe operation of labs and proper use of materials.
Offer purchasing advice and liaise with suppliers for equipment modifications.
Maintain inventory records and update documentation for experiments and equipment.
Keep manuals and technical documentation up to date for all experiments and equipment.
