JOB TITLE: Kennel Attendant – Part-Time DEPARTMENT: Legislative Services NUMBER OF POSITIONS: 1 JOB STATUS & DURATION: Part-Time

HOURS OF WORK: 24-hour workweek LOCATION: ANIMAL SHELTER HOURLY RATE: $32.33 JOB TYPE: Management and Administration POSTING DATE: May 14, 2025 CLOSING DATE: May 28, 2025

Area of Responsibility

Reporting to the Supervisor, Animal Services or Supervisor on Duty, the Kennel Attendant provides guidance to Shelter Assistants, co-op students, and volunteers. Responsibilities include ensuring the care of all animals under the shelter's control through administration of food, maintenance of kennel facilities, monitoring animal welfare and behavior, administering medication and treatment as directed by technical staff, and ensuring exercise programs are completed. Maintain accurate records as required.

  • Ensure kennel facilities are sterile and disinfected; clean litter boxes and other shelter areas.
  • Monitor animals daily, administer minor treatments as prescribed, and maintain records, including quarantined animals.
  • Provide exemplary customer service, assisting clients with adoptions, lost and found animals, and educating on animal legislation and responsible pet ownership.
  • Perform grooming functions.
  • Feed animals, clean food bowls, refill water dishes, prepare special diets, and hand-feed if necessary.
  • Arrange medical treatments, coordinate transportation to veterinary appointments, and monitor returning patients.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding lost animals, adoptions, and licensing.
  • Prepare daily reports related to lost, found, and deceased animals.
  • Ensure animals are properly tagged and identified.
  • Perform general housekeeping and laundry duties in all shelter areas.
  • Handle animal cadavers appropriately.
  • Use computers for data entry and research as needed.
  • Order supplies and food as required.
  • Assist Vet Technician with animal examinations and logging animals into the system.
  • Process payments for services and issue receipts.
  • Participate in special events.
  • Assist with euthanasia procedures under veterinary supervision if required.
Selection Criteria

Education:

  • High School diploma (Grade 12) plus up to one year in Animal Care or equivalent.

Other Skills and Assets:

  • 1-2 years experience in an animal shelter or similar environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on customer service.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to handle cash and perform data entry and email correspondence.

Preference will be given to residents of Brampton.

Various tests and/or exams may be part of the selection process.
