Job summary

WSP in Edmonton, Alberta is seeking a Junior Geologist or Geological Technologist with oil sands core logging experience to join our Field Services team. You will support geotechnical and geological investigations across Alberta, developing hands-on expertise in fieldwork and interpretation under the guidance of experienced professionals.

The role requires a minimum of two years' relevant experience, a passion for field investigations, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• University degree in Geology or related discipline, or Geological Technology Diploma.
• Minimum of 2 years of geological or geotechnical field experience.
• Oil sands core logging experience with McMurray Formation is a strong asset.
• Geotechnical drilling experience with various drilling techniques is an asset.
• Experience in Alberta's Oil Sands region is an asset.
• Strong written and verbal communication; ability to prepare technical documentation.
• Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a field environment.
• Certified Standard First Aid Level C with AED and related certifications are assets.
• Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's Licence and willingness to travel.

The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Junior Geologist or Geological Technologist with oil sands core logging experience to join our team in Edmonton, Alberta. As part of the Field Services – Major Projects Team within our Ground Engineering Group, you will play a key role in supporting geotechnical and geological investigations on projects across Alberta.

This position offers the opportunity to develop your technical expertise through hands‑on fieldwork, geological interpretation, and collaboration with experienced professionals on major projects. We're looking for an energetic, self‑motivated individual with a passion for field investigations and a minimum of two years of relevant industry experience.

Your Impact

• Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring site‑specific HSE policies, procedures, and safety standards are consistently followed.

• Support geological investigations and field programs across a variety of geotechnical and infrastructure projects.

• Perform detailed core logging of bedrock formations encountered throughout Alberta, including the McMurray Formation (oil sands), and contribute to field investigation programs.

• Complete geological interpretation, data analysis, and geological modelling to support project objectives.

• Prepare technical documentation, field records, and reporting deliverables with accuracy and attention to detail.

• Monitor and supervise geotechnical drilling investigations utilizing auger, sonic, mud rotary, CPT, and other specialized drilling techniques.

• Classify soil samples and perform field testing of soils and groundwater in accordance with project requirements.

• Compile field data, maintain organized records, and coordinate project activities through effective verbal and written communication.

• Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and clients to resolve field‑related challenges efficiently and professionally.

• Represent WSP in the field with professionalism, technical competence, and integrity.

The Skills that Set You Apart

• University degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Geoscience, or a related discipline, or completion of a Geological Technology Diploma Program.

• Minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience in geological or geotechnical field investigations.

• Experience with oil sands core logging, particularly within the McMurray Formation, is considered a strong asset.

• Geotechnical drilling experience and familiarity with a variety of drilling techniques are considered assets.

• Experience working within Alberta's Oil Sands region is an asset.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare clear technical documentation.

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple responsibilities, prioritize tasks, and work effectively in a dynamic field environment.

• Reliable, punctual, and committed to delivering high-quality work.

• Standard First Aid Level C with AED, CSTS, CSO, and H2S Alive certifications are considered assets.

• Valid, unrestricted Alberta Class 5 Driver's Licence and willingness to travel to project sites as required.

Compensation

AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $32.20 – $43.30 per hour
MB & ON: $29.40 – $41.00 per hour
NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $29.10 – $39.20 per hour
