Job summary

WSP is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join the Geohazards Practice within the Ground Engineering team in Calgary or Edmonton. You will lead geohazard assessments, mentor multidisciplinary teams, and deliver safe, sustainable mitigation solutions for Western Canada’s critical infrastructure.

You will apply deep geotechnical knowledge to investigations, hazard evaluations, and design work, coordinating with clients and regulators to ensure high-quality project outcomes across demanding

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering; MSc/PhD asset.
  • P.Eng. in Alberta or eligible.
  • 10+ years of geohazard and slope stability experience.
  • Expertise in geotechnical/geo-structural analyses and design for slopes, retaining structures, ground improvement, erosion protection.
  • Proficiency with geotechnical modelling and tools: Global Mapper, SLOPE/W, LPILE, FLAC, SEEP/W, PLAXIS.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary projects, manage budgets/schedules, maintain client relationships.
  • Commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Lead geohazard assessments and mitigation designs for landslides and slope instability.
  • Provide geotechnical investigations, feasibility studies and hazard evaluations.
  • Guide teams through desktop studies, field work, instrumentation, monitoring, design and inspections.
  • Develop innovative mitigation solutions including slope stabilization and ground improvement.
  • Manage projects through all delivery phases, while supporting safety, quality, and budgets.
  • Prepare technical deliverables: reports, models, drawings, specs, cost estimates, permits.
  • Coordinate with clients, regulators, utilities and specialists for integrated delivery.

As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer working in our Geohazards Practice within the overall Ground Engineering team in Calgary or Edmonton, you will play a key role in assessing a variety of geohazard-related challenges and delivering safe, sustainable, and optimized mitigation solutions that protect communities, industries, and ecosystems for generations to come.

Your Impact
  • Lead geohazard assessments, analyses, and mitigation designs for complex projects involving landslides, slope instability, river erosion, and other ground hazards affecting critical infrastructure.
  • Deliver technical expertise on geotechnical investigations, feasibility studies, and hazard evaluations for both existing and proposed linear infrastructure.
  • Guide multidisciplinary teams through desktop studies, field investigations, instrumentation programs, monitoring initiatives, design, construction, and site inspections.
  • Develop innovative and practical mitigation solutions including slope stabilization systems, retaining structures, erosion protection measures, and ground improvement techniques.
  • Manage projects through all phases of delivery while supporting business development, client relationships, safety, quality, budget management, and project success.
  • Prepare high-quality technical deliverables such as engineering reports, models, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and permit documentation.
  • Coordinate with clients, regulatory bodies, utilities, and multidisciplinary specialists to support safe, efficient, and well-integrated project delivery.
The Skills That Set You Apart
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering; MSc or PhD in Geotechnical or Geological Engineering considered an asset.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta, or eligible for registration.
  • 10+ years of experience in geohazard assessments, slope stability engineering, mitigation design, instrumentation monitoring, and geotechnical consulting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in geotechnical and/or geo-structural analyses and design for slopes, retaining structures, ground improvement, and erosion protection.
  • Advanced proficiency with geotechnical modelling and geohazard assessment tools including Global Mapper, SLOPE/W, and LPILE; experience with FLAC, SEEP/W, PLAXIS, and PLAXIS LE is considered an asset.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary projects, manage budgets and schedules, build strong client relationships, and communicate complex technical concepts effectively.

Compensation

AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $104,100 – $138,000
MB & ON: $95,000 – $130,800
NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $94,100 – $124,900
