Job summary

WSP in Canada is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Technician to join the Field Services - Major Projects team in Edmonton, Alberta. You will support complex geotechnical investigations, instrumentation programs, and construction monitoring across major projects.

The ideal candidate has seven years of field geotechnical experience, including drilling and instrumentation installation, and a valid Alberta driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Completion of a Geological, Construction, or Civil Engineering Technology Diploma Program.
• Minimum of 7 years geotechnical field experience with drilling and instrumentation.
• Experience installing and servicing geotechnical instrumentation systems.
• Alberta Oil Sands region experience is an asset.
• Ability to work rotating shifts (1–3 weeks), incl. day and night.
• HSE and safety certifications are assets; valid Alberta driver’s license.

• Monitor and supervise geotechnical drilling investigations (auger, sonic, mud rotary, CPT).
• Classify soils and perform field testing of soils and groundwater.
• Install, commission, maintain, and troubleshoot instrumentation systems.

• Coordinate and manage contractors; collaborate with engineers and clients.
• Validate field findings and support inspections of subgrade, foundations, and piles.
• Compile field data and prepare technical reports for stakeholders.

We have a new opportunity for a Senior Geotechnical Technician to join our team on a full-time basis in Edmonton, Alberta. You will become part of the Field Services - Major Projects team within our Ground Engineering group, supporting complex geotechnical investigations, instrumentation programs, and construction monitoring activities across major projects. This role offers the opportunity to apply and expand your field expertise while working alongside a team of industry professionals delivering impactful infrastructure and resource development projects. We're looking for an experienced and motivated professional with a minimum of seven years of relevant industry experience who is ready to make a meaningful contribution in the field.

Your Impact

• Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring site-specific HSE policies and safe work procedures are consistently followed.
• Monitor and supervise geotechnical drilling investigations utilizing auger, sonic, mud rotary, CPT, and specialty drilling techniques.
• Classify soil samples and perform field testing of soils and groundwater to support project investigations and design.
• Install, commission, maintain, and troubleshoot geotechnical instrumentation systems, including Vibrating Wire Piezometers, Standpipe Piezometers, In-Place Inclinometers, Slope Inclinometers, ShapeAccelArrays, and Monitoring Wells.
• Configure and support data loggers, telemetry networks, remote monitoring systems, and automated monitoring programs.
• Coordinate and manage contractors while collaborating with engineers, clients, and construction teams to resolve field-related challenges.
• Validate construction monitoring findings, including subgrade, foundation, and pile inspections, ensuring quality project outcomes.
• Compile field data, prepare documentation and reports, and communicate technical observations and recommendations to project stakeholders.

The Skills That Set You Apart

• Completion of a Geological, Construction, or Civil Engineering Technology Diploma Program.
• Minimum of 7 years of geotechnical field experience, including geotechnical drilling and instrumentation installation.
• Strong experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring systems.
• Experience working within the Alberta Oil Sands region is considered an asset.
• Ability to work rotational schedules ranging from one to three weeks, including day and night shifts.
• Standard First Aid Level C with AED, CSTS, CSO, and H2S Alive certifications are considered assets.
• Ability to successfully complete pre-access drug and alcohol testing requirements.
• Valid and unrestricted Alberta Class 5 Driver's License with a commitment to safe field operations.

AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $89,800 – $118,900

MB & ON: $81,900 – $112,800

NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $81,100 – $107,700
