Job summary

WSP in Fort McMurray, Alberta is looking for an Intermediate Geotechnical Technician to join our Field Services – Major Projects team in the Ground Engineering group. This full-time role offers hands-on exposure to geotechnical field programs and major infrastructure projects in the Oil Sands region.

The ideal candidate holds a Geological, Construction, or Civil Engineering Technology Diploma with at least 3 years in geotechnical or field services, and hands-on drilling and instrumentation

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Geological, Construction, or Civil Engineering Technology.
  • 3+ years in geotechnical or field services experience.
  • Hands-on drilling and instrumentation installation experience.
  • Experience in Alberta Oil Sands region is a strong asset.
  • Ability to work on rotation schedules (1–3 weeks on shift).
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (unrestricted).
  • Certifications such as Standard First Aid with AED, CSTS, CSO, H2S Alive are assets.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a strong safety culture by following site HSE policies and procedures.
  • Monitor geotechnical drilling programs, instrumentation installations, and core sample recovery.
  • Classify soil and bedrock samples and perform field testing of soils, bedrock, and groundwater.
  • Install and maintain geotechnical instrumentation for slope stability and foundation investigations.
  • Collect readings from geotechnical instruments (inclinometers, ShapeAccelArrays, vibrating wire).
  • Validate and document construction monitoring activities including subgrade, foundation, and pile inspections.
  • Compile accurate field data and communicate findings in clear written and verbal form.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Geotechnical Technician to join our Field Services – Major Projects team within the Ground Engineering group. Based in Fort McMurray, Alberta, this full‑time role offers hands‑on exposure to complex geotechnical field programs and major infrastructure projects in the Oil Sands region.

Your Impact
  • Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring site‑specific HSE policies and standard operating procedures are consistently followed
  • Monitor geotechnical drilling programs, instrumentation installations, and core sample recovery activities
  • Classify soil and bedrock samples and perform field testing of soils, bedrock, and groundwater
  • Install and maintain geotechnical instrumentation supporting slope stability and foundation investigations
  • Collect readings from geotechnical instruments such as inclinometers, ShapeAccelArrays (SAA), and vibrating wire instruments
  • Validate and document construction monitoring activities including subgrade, foundation, and pile inspections
  • Compile accurate field data, maintain detailed records, and communicate findings through clear verbal and written correspondence
The Skills That Set You Apart
  • Completion of a Geological, Construction, or Civil Engineering Technology Diploma
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant geotechnical or field services experience
  • Hands‑on experience with geotechnical drilling and instrumentation installation
  • Experience working in the Alberta Oil Sands region is considered a strong asset
  • Ability to work rotational schedules ranging from 1 to 3 weeks on shift, including days and nights
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills with a reliable, safety‑focused mindset
  • Valid unrestricted Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence
  • Standard First Aid Level C with AED, CSTS, CSO, and H2S Alive certifications are assets

Compensation

AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $32.20 – $43.30
MB & ON: $29.40 – $41.00
NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $29.10 – $39.20
