Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Electrical design: define project requirements, assist with power system and controls design, provide 3D modeling for fabrication.
  • Quotations & Project Management: communicate with suppliers and co-workers, ensure alignment on expectations, contribute to improvements.
  • Mechanical design: perform deliverables with mechanical scope similar to electrical design, ensure drawings meet standards.

POSITION MANDATE

Provides technical drawing and design assistance.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Electrical Design
  • Works with internal contacts to define the scope of project requirements.
  • Assists with electrical power system and controls design.
  • Provides structural 3D modeling and design for fabrication.
  • Provides well thought out product development suggestions and guidance.
Quotations & Project Management
  • Communicates with suppliers, fabricators and co-workers effectively.
  • Follows up with internal contacts to ensure expectations are and remain aligned.
  • Provides input during continuous improvement meetings.
  • Maintains current records of all designs, updates improvements on existing designs’ records.
Mechanical Design
  • Undertakes the steps described in the section above titled Electrical Design, only with deliverables of a mechanical nature.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The position requires CAD/CAD certification or an Engineering design diploma or equivalent education in engineering design and technology. Registered or actively pursuing registration for SASTT accreditation. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Establishes solid internal relations from the start of, and throughout, assigned projects.
  • Competently scopes projects and consistently delivers preliminary designs that gain approval.
  • Plans and generates design drawings that meet customer and/or internal requirements as well as quality and timeline expectations.
  • Executes projects as planned, delivering error-free, high-quality designs and results as well as meeting “on time, as promised, on budget” standards. Also meets projected profit margins.
  • Consistently generates positive internal and external feedback, and review cycle results are positive.
  • Meets electrical and mechanical standards for designs.
  • Complies with relevant policies, procedures, standards and practices, legislation and codes.
  • Follows all procedures, workflows and check lists related to the Master Document List.

JOB SCOPE

The incumbent undertakes a mix of routine and diverse duties requiring knowledge of electrical and mechanical standards, practices and procedures. Assists with design projects requiring short- to medium- term planning. Maintains effective working relations with stakeholders throughout assigned projects. Deals with vendors, manufacturers, and technical support experts. Communications with others typically involve straightforward exchanges of information including design related terminology and concepts. Listens in order to clarify. Combines experience with creativity in exploring design solutions.

EFFORT

Tasks require concentration in order to ensure standards for accuracy and attention to detail are met. Interruptions are disruptive due to the focused nature of the tasks. Project related assignments involve working with, and depending on, others. This may cause stress, depending on the quality of the relationships and/or of own and others’ work. Problems need to be identified before they can be addressed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The incumbent works in an office environment. Occasionally makes site visits.
