JOB POSTING – PRODUCTION & VENUE MANAGER – DOWNSTAGE

Downstage is a Calgary-based company dedicated to producing Canadian theatre that creates conversation around social issues. We produce a season of two full productions along with a work-in-development run of a new work. Our office is located in the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to fill the part-time contract position of Production & Venue Manager from September 1, 2013 to June 31, 2014. This is a 10-month maternity leave cover contract. The successful candidate will work as production manager for the company’s shows and care for Downstage’s two venues.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Production Management of Downstage’s shows, including:
    • Planning, management and tracking of production budgets and designs
    • Sourcing, renting and purchasing materials as necessary for the productions
    • Creating and maintaining production & tech schedules
    • Engaging and coordinating crew for setup & strike
  • Management of Motel and birds & stone venues, including:
    • Programming venues with the oversight of the Artistic Director and in line with mandate to prioritize emerging, original and/or experimental work
    • Issuing rental contracts and invoices and maintaining a rental calendar
    • Space maintenance including venue checks at the end of each rental period
    • Overseeing the loan or rental of the technical inventory of Downstage
QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of theatrical production processes, including a working understanding of the roles of designers, stage managers, and crew. Effective management skills, written and oral communication skills, a flexible approach to working hours, and ability to work under pressure are a must. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational, budgeting and problem-solving skills, and be detail-oriented.

Additional skills that are an asset include a class 5 driver’s license, first aid training, technical knowledge of theatrical sound & lighting equipment and practical knowledge of computers including Microsoft Word & Excel. Previous experience as a theatre production manager is an asset but not required.

HOURS & REMUNERATION

The position is for 630 hours at $15/hour for a maximum fee of $9,450. It is expected that the candidate will average 15 hours per week, although hours will significantly increase during our two production periods (January-February and March-April) and be lighter during non-production times.
