McCuaig & Associates Engineering Ltd. in Burnaby, BC is seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer with a minimum of 5 years of consulting experience in building mechanical systems. The role focuses on design, drawings, specifications, and coordination with clients and consultants.

The candidate should be a P.Eng. or eligible for inter-provincial mobility registration, with strong knowledge of building codes and proficiency in AutoCAD/Revit, Bluebeam Revu, and hydraulic calculations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent education/experience.
• Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC; or eligible for inter-provincial mobility registration.
• Minimum 5 years of consulting engineering experience in building mechanical systems.
• Demonstrated ability to independently design plumbing and fire suppression systems for commercial/institutional buildings.
• Experience preparing plumbing and fire protection design drawings, specifications, and tender documents.
• Ability to perform hydraulic calculations for fire sprinkler systems (NFPA 13) and plumbing system sizing.
• Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including BC Plumbing Code, NFPA 13, NFPA 14, BC Building Code, and relevant CSA standards.
• Experience with domestic water, sanitary/storm drainage, and hot water recirculation systems.
• Experience with standpipe systems and fire pump design.
• Familiarity with hydraulic calculation software (e.g., HydraCalc or equivalent).
• Familiarity with boiler room equipment design and hydronic systems.
• Experience coordinating with architectural, structural, and electrical disciplines during design and construction.
• Ability to review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and perform construction site reviews.
• Ability to check and review the work of junior staff for accuracy and completeness.
• Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills, including report preparation and client presentations.
• Proficiency in Bluebeam Revu, Autodesk AutoCAD/Revit, and Microsoft Office
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Valid driver’s license; position includes travel to project sites.
• Willingness to undergo security clearance or criminal record check when required.

Responsibilities

• Assist full cycle project management from initiation to post-construction.
• Prepare design drawings, specs and tender documents for client review and construction.
• Apply building mechanical systems knowledge to resolve design and on-site issues.
• Coordinate with clients, contractors, suppliers and consultants.
• Conduct site reviews and field investigations.
• Lead meetings internally and externally.
• Ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
• Develop project budgets and cash flows.
• Review shop drawings and RFIs; mentor junior staff.
• Proficiency with HydraCalc, AutoCAD/Revit, Bluebeam Revu.
