Job summary

Kinross Gold Corporation in Red Lake, Ontario, seeks an Intermediate Instrumentation & Control Engineer to support the Great Bear Project. You will review instrumentation and control systems, supervise I&C consultants, and ensure safety and quality across surface and underground facilities. This role requires strong experience with DCS/PLC integration and mining environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical, electronics, or control systems engineering is required.
• PE designation in Ontario or eligibility is preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
• Minimum of 5–10 years of relevant work experience in instrumentation and control engineering.

Responsibilities

• Review vendor documents including PFDs and P&IDs and select instrumentation for the project.
• Ensure design meets specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Oversee I&C consultants and on-site contractors and ensure timelines and budgets are met.
• Coordinate with consultants and contractors to resolve design, construction, and commissioning issues.
• Maintain records, reports, meeting minutes, risk/issue trackers, and project decisions.

Intermediate Instrumentation & Control Engineer

Job Summary

The Intermediate Instrumentation and Control Engineer will assist the Instrumentation and Control Lead with engineering review of the instrumentation and control related work associated with the Great Bear Project, in particular process plant instrumentation and process control, utilities, water management instrumentation and process control, mining services and other infrastructure on surface and underground during Detailed Engineering.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

• Conduct thorough reviews of vendor documents and comment on a wide range of technical documents including process functional descriptions, control narratives, PFDs and P&IDs, and selection of instrumentation for various applications for the Great Bear Project.
• Ensure that the engineering design meets project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Provide feedback and recommend modifications to optimize design efficiency and functionality.
• Oversee key engineering deliverables of I&C consultants in design offices and work of contractors on-site.
• Ensure consultants and contractors adhere to project timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
• Coordinate with consultants and contractors to resolve any issues or challenges that arise during detailed design, construction, and commissioning.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams of consultants, contractors, vendors, and work closely with the Great Bear Project team to ensure quality engineering deliverables regarding safety in design, constructability and cost.
• Conduct required inspections and audits of I&C design, manufacturing, and installations.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices.
• Maintain detailed records of all I&C engineering activities.
• Prepare and submit regular reports to lead engineers.
• Document any design changes, modifications, or issues encountered.
• Maintain meeting minutes, project decisions, risk/issue trackers, and follow-ups with project stakeholders.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

A bachelor's degree in electrical, electronics, or control system engineering is required. A Professional Engineer designation in Ontario, or eligibility to obtain one, is preferred; however equivalent experience may be considered.A minimum of 5-10 years of relevant work experience is required.

• Familiar with industrial automation communication protocols (Modbus, EithernetIP, ProfiNet, Canopen), in addition to standard TCP/IP network skills.
• Knowledge of industrial safety systems, such as LOPA, ATEX/IECEx zoning.
• Familiarity with modern Process Control and Automation methods including Advance Process Control (APC), Ventilation on Demand (VOD), Analytics, simulation tools, Digital Twin and AI tools.
• Experience with specification, startup, and troubleshooting of process control systems on hybrid environment using process control with DCS and high-level integration of vendor PLC applications to DCS, Power Management Systems and SCADA systems.
• Knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations related to instrumentation and control systems, such as ISA, ANSI/IEEE, IEC, CEC and NEC, NFPA.
• Hands-on programming experience of popular PLCs and DCS systems will be an added advantage.
• Good understanding of mining and associated infrastructure, particularly in cold weather environments.
• Familiarity with gold or similar mineral processing and exposure in engineering and commissioning.
• Experience with automation engineering aspects of projects of varying scope and complexity from planning to execution.

Work Conditions

This position is based in Red Lake, Ontario. Local candidates, or those willing to relocate with relocation assistance, will be given priority for this position. The schedule is 5X2. Remote candidates may also be considered for this opportunity; however, relocation to Red Lake will be required by mid 2028. Frequent travel may be required.

Compensation and Total Rewards

The base salary range for the Intermediate Instrumentation and Control Engineer is $95,000 to $118,000 + Short Term Incentive Bonus, + Group Benefit Coverage.

The actual offer will be determined through a comprehensive evaluation of each candidate's experience, capabilities, and potential impact, along with consideration of internal equity, team structure, and benchmark market data for similar positions.
