Job summary

YMCA of Greater Toronto invites applications for an Instructor, Children and Youth Programs - Sports. This on-site, part-time role supports the delivery of YMCA-based sports programming to children and youth, applying established curricula and ensuring safe, inclusive learning environments.

You will develop weekly lesson plans, adapt to different learning styles, and assess participants per YMCA criteria. Requires NCCP training completion and first aid CPR-C/ AED.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in field related to working with children or youth or equivalent experience.
  • Completion of NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills, NCCP Planning a Practice, NCCP Design a Basic Sport Program, and NCCP Making Headway training is required.
  • Current certification in Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C and AED is an asset.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience instructing children and youth in sports such as basketball, soccer, or volleyball.
  • Proven ability to adapt instruction to diverse learning styles and development stages.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement sequential weekly lesson plans.
  • Deliver course content and evaluate participants according to YMCA criteria.

  • Communicate progress to parents and supervisor, verbally and in writing.

The Instructor Children and Youth Programs - Sports delivers YMCA-based sports programming that supports the development, engagement, and success of children and youth participants. The role applies established curriculum and resources to create inclusive, safe, and effective learning environments while adapting programming to meet participant needs. Through coaching, instruction, and relationship-building, the position contributes to positive participant experiences and the overall quality of youth programs.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and implement sequential weekly lesson plans.
  • Recognize participant learning styles and adapt course delivery methods accordingly.
  • Deliver course content and evaluate participants according to established YMCA criteria.
  • Coach and develop participants to support their achievement of program goals.
  • Communicate children’s progress verbally and in writing to parents and the Supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date weekly progress sheets and participant records.
  • Assist and encourage program members to access additional appropriate programs offered at the location, in collaboration with individual program members, program volunteers, and YMCA program staff.
  • Participate actively in scheduled programs, meetings, and special events.
  • Take attendance and ensure participants are signed into and out of the program.
  • Set up and take down recreational, program, and other equipment as required; inspect equipment to ensure it is safe and in good repair, report malfunctions immediately, and remove damaged equipment from circulation.

You bring:

  • Diploma or degree in field related to working with children or youth or equivalent experience.
  • Completion of NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills, NCCP Planning a Practice, NCCP Design a Basic Sport Program, and NCCP Making Headway training is required.
  • Current certification in Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C and AED, is an asset.
  • Minimum 1 year of previous experience instructing children and youth in one or more of the following sports: Basketball, Soccer, and Volleyball.
  • Good theoretical and practical knowledge of various stages of child and youth development through previous related experience and continuing professional development.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in working with children and youth.
  • Ability to encourage and motivate members and volunteers and acknowledge and appreciate their achievements and contributions.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with members, staff, and volunteers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility regarding assigned work schedules, including weekday afternoons, evenings and weekends.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging.
  • Focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children, youth, and vulnerable people in YMCA programs including understanding legal and moral obligations related to reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services
