Job summary

NAIT is seeking an Instructional Assistant II to support day-to-day lab/shop operations in the Academic Coordinator, Automotive Sciences area. You will maintain equipment, deliver technical lessons, supervise students, and collaborate with instructors to develop new lab activities.

The role involves evaluating students with provided rubrics, providing feedback, and ensuring a safe learning environment. A Red Seal journeyperson certification and 5–8 years in industry are required.

Qualifications

  • Automotive Service Technician Journeyperson certification with Red Seal Endorsement.
  • 5–8 years of experience in industry (post journeyperson completion).
  • Equivalencies may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and calibrate lab/shop equipment.
  • Ensure lab security and clean, safe work areas.
  • Manufacture specialized items when required.
  • Liaison with other sections or programs as needed.
  • Independently, and/or team teach, deliver in-lab technical activities/lessons.
  • Evaluate students using rubrics and provide feedback.
  • Supervise students and demonstrate equipment.
  • Prepare, setup and dismantle lab/shop exercises.
  • Assist instructional staff in developing new lab/shop exercises.
  • Provide student tutoring and project support.

Reporting to the Academic Coordinator, Automotive Sciences in the School of Transportation, the position is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and operations of our lab/shop spaces. The position will also deliver technical lessons in the lab/shop environment independently, under the guidance of instructors, using existing rubrics and assessments tools provide by instructors, to evaluate students.

Lab/Shop
Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and calibrate lab/shop equipment
  • Ensure lab security
  • Manufacture specialized items when required
  • Ensure work area is in a safe and clean condition
  • Liaison with other sections or programs when required
Inventory And Budget Control
  • Maintain consumables and inventory of equipment
  • Obtain quotes when ordering new equipment
  • Catalogue equipment manuals and technical literature
Instructional Support
  • Independently, and/or team teach, deliver in lab/shop technical activities/lessons
  • Evaluate students based on existing rubrics and assessment tools, provided by instructors, and provide feedback
  • Independent supervision of students
  • Demonstrate lab/shop equipment
  • Prepare, setup and dismantle lab/shop exercises
  • Assist or perform lab/shop demonstrations of equipment under the supervision of instructional support
  • Ensure knowledge of related equipment including use and application
  • Assist instructional staff when required ensuring the safe and correct use of equipment
  • Assist instructors in the development of new lab/shop exercises
Student Support
  • Provide tutorial/remedial
  • Assist students in the development and execution of technical projects in cooperation with other staff members
  • Ensure students are working in a safe condition
  • Other duties as assigned

Remuneration

Refer to salary range noted on this posting, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.

The compensation range for this job posting is : $63,233.30 - $84,338.80
