Job summary

Norton Rose Fulbright Canada is seeking an HR & Talent Manager to lead the Toronto HR team and partner with Ottawa and national teams. The role focuses on recruitment, onboarding, payroll, performance management, leaves, and offboarding while aligning with business services groups.

You will drive strategic HR initiatives, manage budgets, and support wellness and employee programs in a hybrid Toronto/Ottawa environment with a partner-ready culture.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience managing teams in a large professional services environment.
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial HR laws and best practices.
  • Experience with HRIS software (Workday) and strong MS Office skills.
  • Project management skills with ability to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Discretion, mature judgment and cultural awareness.

Responsibilities

  • Act as strategic HR business partner for Toronto and Ottawa offices and national initiatives.
  • Manage the Toronto HR team; oversee recruitment, onboarding, payroll, performance reviews and leaves.
  • Approve payroll activities for the Toronto office and supervise budgeted programs.
  • Lead HR operations, offboarding, vendor invoices, and department cost approvals.
  • Support wellness, events, and national HR projects; maintain compliant, well-documented files.

4 days per week in office - Toronto officeWorking in collaboration with local and national teams, the HR & Talent Manager is responsible for managing the HR team in Toronto and supporting various national HR initiatives. The incumbent’s focus will be to provide HR support to both the practice and business services groups in Toronto and Ottawa, providing guidance to the team and being an escalation point as needed.You will be focusing on:Act as a strategic HR business partner to support business services in the Toronto and Ottawa offices as well as the practice groups.Manage the Toronto HR team and support activities and processes including recruitment, onboarding and orientation, payroll, performance management, development, coaching, salary reviews, leaves and departures.Approve payroll activities for the Toronto office.Work closely with the Office Managing Partners, the Legal Administration Senior Manager and business services leaders.Manage daily HR operations and program administration, including ensuring efficient processes, updated files and records are organized and documented.Manage the voluntary and involuntary departure process including all related offboarding activities.Participate in HR budget process with director to determine suitable programming needs.Oversee the approvals for department costs such as Firm program reimbursements, team expenses, vendor fees, cheque requisitions and invoices, and ensure budget is appropriately managed.Play an important role in supporting key national and local HR initiatives, acting as a contact for questions, providing interpretation on policies, overseeing leaves in conjunction with specialist and benefit teams, and handling complex HR issues.Stay current with market trends and best practices, with well-developed networks in the industry.Oversee the planning of various employee wellness and social activities, employee appreciation events, social impact fundraising, and lunch and learn offerings.Act as a point of contact for HR related matters regionally.Deliver best-in-class people-centric support while fostering an open and collegial culture.Participate in special projects and national initiatives as needed.What you bring to the role:Post-secondary education in business administration or human resources management; CHRL designation strongly preferred.A minimum of 8+ years of experience managing teams, preferably in a large law firm or in a similar position within a professional services environment.Demonstrated knowledge in a broad range of HR aspects with a continuous improvement mindset.Current knowledge of applicable federal and provincial laws and regulations and stays informed of HR best practices within the industry.Experience with HRIS software (Workday) and strong Microsoft skills.Highly effective project management skills with the ability to think critically and meet multiple deadlines.Excellent technical skills and ability to work with agility in an electronic environment.Mature with superior judgment and discretion and ability to handle sensitive situations with cultural acumen.Effective communicator with a collaborative nature who can build consensus across a broad range of stakeholders.Self-motivated and results-oriented professional who thrives in an ever-changing environment with proven ability to act as a change agent.High performer with pragmatic approach to challenges and keen focus on thrilling clients.Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a complex matrix environment, with focus on building effective teams.Positive team player, enthusiastic, and open to new ways of doing things.Why join our team:Hybrid work environmentRetirement savings plan with employer contributionBenefit premiums paid by the firmTelemedicine servicesWellness matters: Flexible health and wellness allowance that covers much more than gym memberships!Training and development programs based on your interests and needsThe salary bands provided reflect the typical range for this role in the region indicated.
