Job summary

Ed Seguin & Sons is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Civil Construction and Surface Mining team in Northern Ontario. The role focuses on operating heavy equipment on projects including road construction, site development and mining, on a schedule averaging ~50 hours per week.

The successful candidate will apply knowledge of grades, soil conditions, utilities and equipment maintenance while delivering safe, efficient work and collaborating with supervision and field

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of heavy equipment operating experience.
• Strong understanding of grades, soil conditions and construction processes.
• Ability to operate safely around underground and overhead utilities.
• Good knowledge of equipment mechanical functions, inspections and preventative care.
• Willingness to perform labour duties when required.
• Valid Ontario G driver’s licence; AZ licence is an asset.

• Safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, compactors and other construction equipment.
• Perform excavation, trenching, ditching, grading, removals, demolition, material placement and earthworks.
• Read and understand grades, elevations, construction drawings and field instructions.
• Excavate, place, load, compact and manage soil and aggregate materials to required specifications and grades.
• Safely expose and operate equipment around underground utilities and near overhead structures.

Position Overview

Ed Seguin & Sons is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to join our growing Civil Construction and Surface Mining team.

The position averages approximately 50 hours per week, primarily on projects throughout Northern Ontario, with a focus on the North Bay, Sudbury and surrounding areas.

Reporting to the on-site Supervisor, the Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment on civil construction, aggregate and surface mining projects.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of construction processes, grades, soil conditions, underground and overhead utilities, and equipment operation and maintenance. This position requires an operator who can work effectively around other equipment and field personnel while consistently producing safe, accurate and efficient work.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment, including excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, compactors and other construction equipment.
• Perform excavation, trenching, ditching, grading, removals, demolition, material placement, loading and other earthworks.
• Read and understand grades, elevations, construction drawings and field instructions.
• Excavate, place, load, compact and manage various soil and aggregate materials to achieve required specifications and grades.
• Safely expose and operate equipment around existing underground utilities.
• Safely operate equipment near overhead utilities, structures, workers and other equipment.
• Follow safe ground-disturbance practices and project-specific procedures.
• Complete daily pre-operation and post-operation equipment inspections and required documentation.
• Identify equipment deficiencies and assist with routine maintenance and care of assigned equipment.
• Follow direction from Supervisors and Project Management and execute assigned work safely, professionally and efficiently.
• Assist with general labour and field activities when required.
• Work on a variety of projects, including road construction, underground infrastructure, surface mining, site development, demolition, concrete, paving and aggregate operations.
• Maintain a professional attitude and contribute positively to the project team.
  

Requirements / Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of heavy equipment operating experience, preferably in civil construction, earthworks or surface mining.
• Strong understanding of grades, excavation, soil conditions and construction processes.
• Demonstrated ability to safely operate equipment around underground and overhead utilities.
• Good understanding of equipment mechanical functions, inspections and preventative care.
• Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a field team.
• Willingness to perform labour duties when required.
• Safety-conscious, dependable, organized and professional.
• Valid Ontario G driver's licence required.
• AZ driver's licence is considered an asset.
• Ability and willingness to work approximately 50 hours per week and travel to projects throughout Northern Ontario as required.
