Job summary

Sid Grabell Contracting in the Niagara region is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to support underground utility installations, site prep, grading, and general construction work. You will run excavators, backhoes, skid steers and other equipment while maintaining safety and quality on diverse projects.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years of experience operating 3–16 ton machines, hold a valid Ontario DZ/AZ license, and can read blueprints and locate utilities.

Qualifications

• 5+ years experience operating 3-ton to 16-ton equipment (mini excavators, backhoes, skid steers, full-size excavators).
• Valid Ontario DZ or AZ licence preferred.
• Ability to interpret drawings, locates, and specifications accurately.
• Strong commitment to safety and following safety policies.

• Safely operate heavy equipment for excavation, trenching, grading and site prep.
• Perform trenching for hydro installations including duct banks and vaults.
• Prepare ground for concrete pads, sidewalks and curbs.

About the Role

Sid Grabell Contracting (SGC) is a well-established electrical and civil utility contractor serving industrial, commercial, and infrastructure clients throughout the Niagara Region. We are currently seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to support underground utility installations, site preparation, grading, and general construction activities.

This role is ideal for a safety-focused operator who is capable of running a variety of heavy equipment and supporting field crews across a range of project types.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely operate heavy equipment including excavators, backhoes, skid steers, and mini excavators for excavation, trenching, grading, and site prep
• Perform trenching for hydro installations including duct banks, vaults, pull boxes, and pole bases
• Prepare ground for concrete pads, sidewalks, curbs, and other surface infrastructure
• Assist with grading and restoration following utility or civil construction work
• Perform equipment pre-start inspections and complete required pre-check paperwork.
• Conduct routine equipment maintenance and basic servicing to ensure proper condition
• Assist the team with general on-site work once equipment operation tasks are completed
• Read and understand blueprints, drawings, utility locates, and job specifications to ensure work aligns with design and safety requirements

Qualifications

• 5+ Years experience operating 3-ton to 16-ton equipment such as mini excavators, backhoes, skid steers, and full-size excavators
• Valid DZ or AZ Ontario driver’s licence preferred
• Ability to interpret drawings, locates, and specifications accurately
• Strong commitment to safety and ability to follow workplace safety policies and procedures
• Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions and handle physically demanding tasks
• Good communication and teamwork skills
• Clean driver’s abstract and valid driver’s licence

Assets (not required but preferred):

• Experience operating dozer, telehandler, or digger derrick equipment
• Experience in electrical utility
