AtkinsRéalis is hiring a H&S Onboarding & Training (Construction) Specialist to join the team supporting our latest Project in Toronto. The successful candidate will report to the Senior Manager, Health and Safety on the Project. The purpose of this role is to support the project in achieving top tier Safety and Security results. This involves interfacing across all project teams to establish solid relationships, provide leadership on Safety & Security elements, resources, audits, training, evaluation of own and contractor/subcontractor systems, analyze safety-related data, and develop programs and processes for the continued improvement of Safety & Security performance.

Your role within the Team

As a member of the HSE – Major Projects team, you will report to the Senior Manager Health, Safety and Security and be responsible for:

  • Implementing the duties of the health and safety position they are appointed into which could include Onboarding & Training, Reporting, Incident Investigation, and coordinating Threat and Hazard Impact Risk Assessments (T/HIRA).
  • Providing subject matter expertise, advice, and guidance with respect to relevant health and safety matters across the program.
  • Working collaboratively with the contractor to confirm that the measures set out in the site-specific safety plan are effectively implemented.
  • Undertaking periodic assessments/audits and identifying opportunities for improvement and recommending corrective actions.
  • Providing management-level reporting and identifying key risks and issues for escalation to the appropriate decision makers.
  • Coordinating with department heads to determine training needs.
  • Mapping out annual training plans and schedules.
  • Designing and developing onboarding and training programs (outsourced and/or in-house).
  • Selecting appropriate training methods or activities (e.g. simulations, mentoring, on-the-job training, professional development classes).
  • Marketing available training to employees and providing necessary information about sessions.
  • Conducting training needs assessments and identifying skills or knowledge gaps that need to be addressed.
  • Using known education principles and staying up-to-date on new training methods and techniques.
  • Designing, preparing, and ordering educational aids and materials.
  • Assessing instructional effectiveness and determining the impact of training on employee skills and KPIs.
  • Gathering feedback from trainers and trainees after each educational session.
  • Partnering with internal stakeholders and liaising with experts regarding instructional design.
  • Maintaining an updated curriculum database and training records to site and legislative requirements.
  • Hosting train-the-trainer sessions for internal subject matter experts.
  • Managing and maintaining in-house training facilities, LMS systems, and equipment.
  • Researching and recommending new training methods.
  • Reviewing health and safety data and trends to determine training gaps and corrective measures.
  • Conducting training and onboarding with site personnel as required.

Qualifications for the Position

  • Typically, a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in an on-site health and safety role (inspection, coordinator, onboarding and training, and/or reporting).
  • Experience in working within construction environments; major infrastructure/aviation program experience is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and implementing effective health and safety management plans.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and comfortable in working with the owner, consultants, and contractors.
  • Diploma/certificate in health and safety and/or equivalent training experience.
