QEOSH Staffing & Recruitment Inc. is supporting a client in the oil & gas sector by recruiting a Health & Safety Director to join their Calgary team. This is a senior leadership role with direct reports and a pathway to drive strategic safety programs.

The successful candidate will translate regulatory requirements into executable priorities, strengthen compliance, and guide the organization toward a culture of safety, accountability, and measurable performance for ongoing operational excellence.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in occupational health and safety; CRSP/CHSC designation preferred.
  • At least 15 years of progressive health and safety experience, including five or more years in a leadership role within the oil and gas sector.
  • Demonstrated success developing management systems, leading organizational change, improving safety performance, and building capable teams.
  • Strong knowledge of Alberta occupational health and safety legislation, COR, audits, incident investigation, risk management, contractor management, and emergency response.
  • Executive-level communication, presentation, influencing, and relationship-building skills including the ability to communicate with senior leadership and a Board of Directors.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the health and safety function, including organizational structure, resources, systems, policies, training, reporting, and overall effectiveness.
  • Develop and execute a multi-year improvement roadmap aligned with priorities, regulatory requirements, and corporate objectives.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company’s health and safety management system, policies, procedures, standards, and safe work practices.
  • Strengthen safety culture through visible leadership, employee engagement, effective communications, and clear accountability at all levels.
  • Oversee incident reporting and investigation, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, risk assessments, hazard analysis, and performance trend reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety and transportation requirements; lead regulatory interactions, audits, inspections, and required reporting.
  • Build effective training, competency, contractor safety, and emergency preparedness programs.
  • Establish performance measures and executive dashboards; prepare materials for quarterly Board meetings and present results, risks, priorities, and recommendations.
  • Coach and develop the health and safety team, support succession planning and knowledge transfer.

This role offers a starting salary up to 185K, plus a Solid total compensation package and full benefits.

Health & Safety Director Role Summary

The Health & Safety Director will provide strategic direction and operational oversight for the health and safety programs, systems, and culture. The successful candidate will assess and modernize the function, strengthen regulatory compliance and risk management, develop organizational capability, and partner with leaders and employees to embed safe, accountable practices across the business.

This is a senior leadership opportunity for a practical, strategic professional who can translate regulatory requirements and operational risk into clear priorities, measurable performance, and sustainable improvement.

Health &Safety Director Primary Duties & Responsibilities include
  • Assess the health and safety function, including organizational structure, resources, systems, policies, training, reporting, and overall effectiveness.

To be considered for this role, the “Health & Safety Director ” must have the following qualifications:
  • Degree or diploma in occupational health and safety or a related discipline; CRSP or CHSC designation preferred.
  • At least 15 years of progressive health and safety experience, including five or more years in a leadership role and significant experience in the oil and gas sector.
  • Demonstrated success developing management systems, leading organizational change, improving safety performance, and building capable teams.
  • Strong knowledge of Alberta occupational health and safety legislation, COR, audits, incident investigation, risk management, contractor management, and emergency response.
  • Executive-level communication, presentation, influencing, and relationship-building skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership and a Board of Directors.
