Job summary

EllisDon is seeking a Health, Safety & Environmental Coordinator to lead site onboarding, manage high-energy hazards, and collaborate with project teams to reduce risks on major construction projects in Canada. The role emphasizes safety culture, training, and incident investigations.

The successful candidate will have 3–5 years of safety experience, an NCSO designation, and a strong grasp of energy-based safety concepts and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of direct safety experience.
• NCSO designation required.
• Experience in ICI building or civil infrastructure is preferred but not mandatory.

Responsibilities

• Lead site-specific safety onboarding and workforce engagement to manage high-energy hazards.
• Partner with project teams, supervisors and sub-contractors to identify, assess, and mitigate critical risks using energy-based safety principles and SIF prevention strategies.
• Conduct field verifications, inspections, observations, and incident investigations focusing on control effectiveness for high-consequence hazards.
• Collaborate with site leadership to troubleshoot safety challenges and develop practical, operational solutions for safe project execution.
• Monitor work activities and contractor performance for compliance with laws, standards, and project safety expectations.
• Facilitate safety education and awareness sessions on hazard assessment, critical risk management, fall protection, WHMIS, PPE, and emergency response.
• Support development of a positive safety culture through coaching and field engagement.

You as a Health, Safety & Environmental Coordinator will:

• Lead site-specific safety onboarding, and workforce engagement activities to ensure workers understand and effectively manage high-energy hazards.
• Partner with project teams, supervisors, and sub-contractors to identify, assess, and mitigate critical risks using Energy-Based Safety principles and Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention strategies.
• Conduct field verifications, inspections, observations, and incident investigations, focusing on the effectiveness of controls for high-consequence hazards.
• Collaborate with site leadership to troubleshoot complex safety challenges and develop practical, operationally sound solutions that support safe project execution.
• Monitor work activities and contractor performance to ensure compliance with legislative requirements, company standards, critical risk procedures, and project-specific safety expectations.
• Facilitate and deliver safety education and awareness sessions, including topics such as hazard assessment, critical risk management, fall protection, WHMIS, PPE, and emergency response.
• Support the development and sustainment of a positive safety culture through coaching, mentoring, field engagement, and constructive feedback.
• Review and provide technical input on contractor safety submittals, work plans, hazard assessments, lift plans, and other critical-risk documentation.
• Support incident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective action development, and the sharing of lessons learned across project teams.
• Compile, interpret, and communicate project safety performance metrics, trends, and leading indicators to support continuous improvement.

Is this the right role for you?

• Minimum 3-5 years of years of direct safety experience.
• National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation required.
• Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, or progress toward certification, is considered a strong asset.
• Experience in ICI building construction or civil/infrastructure construction is preferred but not mandatory.
• Demonstrated understanding of Energy-Based Safety principles, critical risk management, and Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention methodologies.
• Strong technical field safety knowledge with the ability to identify hazards, evaluate controls, and support operational teams in resolving complex safety challenges.
• Proven ability to build relationships, influence decision-making, and collaborate effectively with project managers, superintendents, supervisors, workers, and sub-contractors.
• Practical experience conducting incident investigations, risk assessments, inspections, and critical risk verification activities.
• Strong communication, coaching, and facilitation skills with the ability to engage workers and leaders at all levels of a project organization.
