Job summary

Red Deer Polytechnic invites applications for a permanent Lab Attendant in the Health and Wellness area in Red Deer, Alberta. The role supports lab operations, inventory, and safety, contributing to student learning and realistic simulations.

You will assist with kit preparation, hazardous material handling, and daily lab maintenance as part of a collaborative team. Qualifications include a high school diploma, First Aid/CPR, basic computer skills, and the ability to lift heavy equipment.

  • WHMIS and OHS safety knowledge preferred.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

Job description

Position Summary

The School of Health and Wellness is currently seeking a permanent Lab Attendant to join our growing team! The Health and Wellness Lab Attendant work together with the lab staff in performing duties which enhance student learning. The Health and Wellness Lab Attendant assist with the collection and organization of specialized supplies and equipment for the School of Health and Wellness. This position will assist with lab set-up and assist with simulation events as needed.

Position Responsibilities
Inventory Stocking and Building
  • Assists with the day-to-day packing, unpacking and preparation of supplies and materials
  • Build student kits according to plan sheets; distribute kits as needed
  • Assists with the safe storage of hazardous materials, which may include biohazardous material, medications, and equipment
  • Assists with the completion of annual inventory of all labs
  • Assist with digitalizing inventory and implement/maintain inventory system
  • Ensure storage areas are clean and tidy
Lab Maintenance and Safety
  • Performs general cleaning in Health labs, referring to contractor as necessary
  • Assists with movement of lab equipment from one lab to another
  • Makes recommendations for repairs or assists with minor repair of equipment in consultation with Coordinator
  • Ensure labs are secure when not in use
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment, complies with polytechnic health and safety policies, practices, and programs in keeping with occupational health safety legislation and regulations
Lab Set-up
  • Assists with set-up and take-down of labs as requested
  • Ensures faculty has access to props and assists with the application of make-up or creation of realistic looking body fluids
  • Assists in preparing manikins and standardized patients with appropriate make-up and props for simulation events
  • Moves equipment as needed
  • Actively acquires knowledge and skills related to this position
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent to about 12 years of schooling
  • First Aid/CPR
  • At least 6 months’ experience
  • Safety courses such as WHMIS, OHS
  • Familiarity of health care technology
  • Ability to lift, bend and move heavy equipment essential
  • Ability to work in a demanding environment and ability to prioritize
  • Ability to troubleshoot electronic equipment
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team
  • Basic computer skills & knowledge of Microsoft 365 (emphasis on Excel)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a community college certificate including trades apprenticeships or equivalent in a Science or Health related field.
  • General health care knowledge and health care terminology an asset
  • Experience of training in the art of moulage is an asset
Salary

$40,373 - $47,231 annually
