Job summary

Toromont Cat is seeking a Health and Safety Specialist to join our team in Toronto. You will elevate safety programs, support supervisory and management teams, and collaborate with leadership across mining operations.

The role involves site visits, audits, incident investigations, and the implementation of sustainable safety actions to ensure regulatory compliance and a safe workplace for personnel and assets.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a related field with 3+ years' experience in an operations position.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in Occupational Health and Safety, Workers’ Compensation, Dangerous Goods, Fire Safety and Training, Material Handling/Warehousing.
  • Experience in mining related industries would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Ontario OH&S Act and Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.
  • CRST/CRSP certification would be an asset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across all levels.
  • Travel to multiple locations and flexible hours.
  • Bilingual in English and French preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Model safe, environmentally sound and healthy work behaviours per Toromont Health and Safety policies.
  • Partner with customers to meet site safety requirements.
  • Serve as a resource for mining operations across Toromont Cat territories.
  • Conduct site visits and audits to ensure policy and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist management in correcting compliance deficiencies and implementing corrective actions.
  • Investigate incidents to determine root causes and preventive measures.
  • Liaise with Workers’ Compensation Boards on behalf of Toromont Cat for Mining Operations.
  • Develop and implement health and safety programs, including training and site SOPs.

Job description

Toromont Cat is seeking a Health and Safety Specialist to join our team in Toronto. The Health and Safety Specialist will play a key role in elevating and continuously improving the support provided to the supervisory and management teams.

The successful candidate will be collaborating with the leadership team members of the Mining operations to ensure all health and safety policies, procedures and programs are implemented and adhered to within the operations. The successful candidate will be providing health and safety service with the 4 A’s mindset - assess, analyze, audit, and assist. The successful candidate will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of Company personnel and assets in conjunction with legislative compliance relative to an autonomous haul truck mine site.

Compensation

$69,520.00 to $86,900.00

The listed base salary is just one component of our total rewards package, and performance-based or discretionary bonuses may be available.

In a typical day, YOU will:
  • Model the way for safe, environmentally sound and healthy work behaviours in support of Toromont's Health and Safety Policies, Programs and initiatives.
  • Partner with our customers in support of Toromont Cat's and individual site safety requirements.
  • Act as an industry‑specific resource and provide support to Mining operations throughout the Toromont Cat territories.
  • Conduct site visit and audits to operation locations for compliance with corporate policies, applicable legislation, regulations and standards.
  • Assist operation management in understanding and correcting compliance deficiencies through the implementation of effective and sustainable actions.
  • Assist operation management in the investigation of incidents to determine root causes and drive the development of corrective actions and preventative measures.
  • Has the responsibility to liaise with various Workers’ Compensation Boards, representing Toromont Cat for the Mining Operations.
  • Assist operation management in the implementation of health and safety programs, including but not limited to training, assist in the drafting of site specific SOPs, emergency response plan, medical monitoring program (if needed).
  • Conduct research on specific topics and provide recommendation of solutions, e.g. fall protection, air quality, exposure to designated substance (if any)
  • Collect and analyze safety data and conduct related research to identify trends
  • Prepare and produce reports and statistics for management
  • Provide “best industry practices” solutionsfor workplace hazards
  • Identify training requirements and gaps for site management and, where possible, conduct and/or coordinate training and education programs for employees, management and customers as required based on site requirements
  • Work directly with external authorities and groups (government, industry, vendors) by representing Toromont Cat at meetings, hearings, inspections and committees.
Must-haves for this role:
  • Post-Secondary Educationin a related field with over 3 year’s experience in an operations position.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience inthe areas ofOccupational Health and Safety, Workers’ Compensation, Dangerous Goods, Fire Safety and Training, Material Handling/Warehousing.
  • Experience in mining related industries would be an asset.
  • Safety conscious with high standard investigative, analytical and human relations capacity.
  • Improvement mindset with sound working knowledgeof the Ontario OH&S Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Technician or Professional (CRST / CRSP) certification would be an asset.
  • Customer centric and strongcommunication and interpersonal skills to build relationships and share information across all levels of the organization.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with a sense of urgency and ability to work collaboratively in a team.
  • Results driven and proactivewith the ability to manage and prioritize with multiple tasksin a fast paced and deadline driven environment.
  • Self-motivated professional and team player with strong business acumen and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPointand comfortable with systems and other in-house tools
  • Willing and able to travel to multiple locations, manage rotationalschedules ongoingand work flexible hours in support of the business needs
  • Avalid Driver’s License and clean Driver's Abstract
  • Bilingual in English and French preferred
