Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. seeks an experienced HAZMAT Team Leader to guide a dedicated team through complex emergency responses and major projects. You will plan, execute, and close projects, train technicians, and foster client relationships while expanding service offerings.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to HAZMAT emergency responses including rail, road, marine, and facilities.
  • Perform chemical transloading and decontamination as required.
  • Organize resources for response and preparation, including personnel and equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is operational and properly serviced.
  • Lead safety programs, field safety meetings and risk assessments.
  • Coordinate site visits with clients and monitor project hours and materials.

Summary

The HAZMAT Team Leader will lead a team of highly trained individuals who handle the company’s most dynamic projects and emergency responses. The leader will be responsible for planning, executing, and closing major projects/responses, training technicians, and fostering professional business relationships while consistently looking for ways to expand services provided. This individual will be highly motivated, coachable and willing to obtain further training while always displaying a positive attitude.

The HAZMAT Team Leader will lead a team of highly trained individuals who handle the company’s most dynamic projects and emergency responses. The leader will be responsible for planning, executing, and closing major projects/responses, training technicians, and fostering professional business relationships while consistently looking for ways to expand services provided. This individual will be highly motivated, coachable and willing to obtain further training while always displaying a positive attitude.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Respond at a moment’s notice to HAZMAT Emergency Responses including responding to rail, road, marine, and fixed facilities.
  • Perform chemical transloading from one means of containment to another. This may include tank cars, tank trucks, fixed facility tanks, or other small means of containment.
  • Perform chemical neutralization and decontamination as required.
  • Assist with organizing all resources required in both a response situation and in preparation for a potential response situation, including personnel, equipment, and documentation.
  • Ensure all emergency response equipment is operationally ready including preparation, equipment decontamination, and servicing of ER equipment as outlined and required.
  • Ensure all relevant information and documentation is gathered and maintained when providing emergency services.
  • Lead safety in all aspects of emergency response, including following GFL procedures, completing safety documentation, and upholding GFL’s high level of safety.
  • Participate in live training events.
  • Willing to participate in specialized scheduled projects as required.
  • Accountable for upholding the GFL safety and service standards within the division.
  • Coordinate service on site and oversee work performed for safety and quality excellence including understanding scopes of work and leading without deviation.
  • Assist with incident investigations including corrective action development.
  • Promote and lead GFL’s safety programs by conducting safety meetings, safe work plans and job hazard assessments.
  • Lead wildland fire operations including structure protection.
  • Engage in site visits with clients and collect appropriate information to ensure project success.
  • Lead company initiatives while always displaying a positive attitude.
  • Track daily project hours, consumables, waste disposal volumes, etc. and report accurately to the Emergency Response Manager.
  • Lead environmental remediation services including working with excavation equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned to support GFL operations.
Requirements
  • Class 5 driver’s license with a fairly clean abstract required; Class 1 or 3 would be an asset.
  • Ability to be flexible and fulfill the on-call and travel requirements of this position.
  • Experience in handling and/or transporting hazardous materials or emergency response would be an asset.
  • Physically fit and able to wear chemical protective clothing and respiratory protection from time to time as required. This will require the Hazmat Technician to be clean shaven.
  • Ability to work out of town from time to time as needed.
  • Any prior training or experience relating to the following would be an asset: HAZMAT Technician, Tank car Specialist, Tank truck Specialist, IC S, Confined Space Entry, etc. Please note extensive training will be provided by GFL to the successful candidate.

  • Willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Must be safety conscious and dependable.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude required. Mechanical experience would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to communicate thoughts and ideas effectively, both written and verbally.
  • Effective organizational and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
