Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. Bowmanville Emergency Response division seeks an Emergency Response Operator to join the team. You will provide emergency response support, conduct environmental clean-up, and mitigate HazMat incidents.

The role includes technical rescues, dangerous goods consulting, and participation in safety training. Preferred candidates have post-secondary education in a related field, HazMat certifications, and a DZ license.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a related field is preferred.
  • Pre-service Fire/Medical/Police training is required or asset.
  • NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Operations certification is preferred.
  • NFPA 1001 Level 1 or 2 certification is preferred.
  • Valid DZ license with a clean driving record is required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental clean-up activities.
  • Ensure Hazardous-Materials incident mitigation.
  • Perform chemical transfers.
  • Perform technical rescue activities.
  • Involvement in chemical firefighting tasks.
  • Provide dangerous goods consulting.
  • Participate in industrial services.
  • Respond to emergencies as requested.
  • Participate in health & safety training as required.
  • Operate the position safely and efficiently.
  • Standby confined space rescue duties.
  • Complete documentation and reporting.
  • Follow policies and procedures.
  • Support the organization’s vision and values.
  • Promote a harassment-free work environment.
  • Work safely to avoid endangering self/others.
  • Report hazards, accidents or risks.
  • Adhere to OHSA, WSIB Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act.
  • Participate in team meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Our Bowmanville GFL Emergency Response division is looking for a new Emergency Response Operator to join its team! We are looking for a responsible and reliable candidate to provide emergency response support for our organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct environmental clean-up activities.
  • Ensure Hazardous-Materials incident mitigation.
  • Perform chemical transfers.
  • Perform technical rescue activities.
  • Involvement in chemical firefighting tasks.
  • Provide dangerous goods consulting.
  • Participate in various Industrial services.
  • Responding to various emergencies as requested.
  • Participating in job specific and health & safety training as required.
  • Operating his/her position in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Participating in standby confined space rescue work.
  • Completing work related documentation and reporting.
  • Follow all established organizational policies and procedures.
  • Support the vision and values of the organization.
  • Promote and participate in a work environment free of workplace harassment and violence.
  • Perform work in a safe manner, so as not to endanger oneself or others.
  • Reporting workplace hazards, accidents or other occurrences that may pose a risk to the organization or the safety of oneself or others.
  • Adhere to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act.
  • Participate in team/staff meetings when required.
  • Work in a manner that preserves confidentiality and minimizes risk.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills And Competencies
  • Post-secondary education, preferably in a related area of study.
  • Pre-service Fire, Medical, or Police training.
  • NFPA 472 Hazardous Material Operations.
  • NFPA 1001 level 1 or 2.
  • Valid DZ license with a suitable drivers abstract (standard transmission – up to 18 speed).
  • On-call work availability for emergency response.
  • Hazardous materials and/or environmental experience an asset.
  • Vacuum truck experience an asset.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Confined space awareness.
  • Reliable means of personal transportation
  • Willingness to work at extreme heights and within confined spaces.
  • Participate in pre-employment and post-incident drug & alcohol testing.
  • Professional and trustworthy, with a customer focus to his/her work.
  • Must be a highly motivated, service and team-oriented individual with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Valid Certification in First Aid/CPR (or willingness to obtain).
  • Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset.
