Job summary

GFL Environmental is seeking full-time AZ Operators to support our Emergency Response Unit in Kitchener, ON. The role involves transporting, removing, delivering, and collecting hazardous wastes from customer sites, with loading/unloading duties on site as needed.

Operators will work with vacuum and box trucks and must maintain a high standard of safety, documentation, and teamwork in fast-paced environments. Overtime, weekends, and on-call availability may be required to respond to incidents.

Qualifications

  • AZ licence with a suitable driver’s abstract is required.
  • Experience operating manual transmission.
  • Able to lift 75+ lbs and work outdoors in varying conditions.
  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Strong organizational and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Transport, remove, deliver, and collect hazardous wastes from customer sites.
  • Load and unload trucks on site.
  • Operate vacuum trucks, box trucks, and other equipment within license restrictions.
  • Follow established safety policies and procedures.
  • Complete work-related documentation and reporting.
  • Collaborate with emergency response teams and stakeholders.

Job description

GFL Environmental is looking for full-time AZ Operators to support our Emergency Response Unit out of Kitchener, ON! The driver will transport, remove, deliver, and collect various liquid and solid hazardous wastes from various customer sites. The successful candidate will be required to load and unload trucks. Will also have the ability to operate a variety of truck and equipment including vacuum trucks, box trucks, and any other equipment that fits their license on site if necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
  • The Emergency Response Operator will respond to various incidents such as:
  • Environmental and Industrial spills
  • Clandestine laboratory decommissioning
  • Highway incidents involving tractor trailers, accidents, and chemical leaks
  • Train derailments involving hazardous chemicals, fires, and site safety planning.
  • Marine operations mostly regarding fuel spills into open bodies of water. Involving boom deployment and boat operations.
  • Weather event responses involving wind/ice storms, forest fires, and flooding.
  • Chemical assessments and advisory services.
  • Working alongside police, fire, EMS, Environment Canada, and other stakeholders.
  • Incidents involving heavy equipment, vacuum trucks, and water blasters.
  • Participating in job specific and health & safety training as required
  • Operating his/her position in an efficient and safe manner
  • Completing work related documentation and reporting
  • Follow all established organizational policies and procedures
  • Promote and participate in a work environment free of workplace harassment and violence
  • Perform work in a safe manner, so as not to endanger oneself or others
  • Reporting workplace hazards, accidents or other occurrences that may pose a risk to the organization or the safety of oneself or others
  • Adhere to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act
  • Participate in team/staff meetings when required
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:
  • Valid AZ licence required with a suitable drivers abstract and experience operating manual transmission
  • Overtime as required
  • Weekend work may be required, depending on business needs
  • On-call work availability for emergency responses
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to perform routine vehicle maintenance.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with strong oral and written communication abilities.
  • Exceptional organizational abilities with task prioritization, multi-tasking, use of timelines and time management techniques.
  • High level of personal integrity.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Professional/mature demeanor under stressful situations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Will be required to work both indoors and outdoors.
  • Manual dexterity, ability to lift 75+ lbs required.
