Job summary

McElhanney’s internship program for May 2027 offers hands-on experience in field and office settings across Canada, with mentors and a cohort of top students. You’ll support field and office work on Land Surveying and Geomatics projects from Fort St.

John, gaining exposure to diverse surveying tasks and advanced geomatics technologies. You’ll learn to use GNSS, total stations, RPAS, 3D laser scanning, and data processing while adhering to safety practices that emphasize Think Safe, Work Safe,

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a Diploma or Degree program in Geomatics.
• Ability to work in outdoor settings including wilderness/backcountry environments for extended periods with varied hours.
• A willingness and ability to travel and work out of town.
• Ability to lift heavy equipment.
• Previous work experience in outdoors environments is an asset.
• Attention to detail, good judgement and clear communication skills.
• Modern technical aptitude and an interest in advanced reality capture, GIS, geospatial, or geomatics technologies are an asset.
• Valid Class 5 Drivers License.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the use of GNSS receivers, total stations and digital levels.
• Collaborate with Project Managers to prepare files, plans, maps, field notes, and survey data for project delivery.
• Research plans, titles, documents, and related geospatial information.
• Maintain, clean, monitor, and report the condition of equipment and vehicles.
• Work in both office and field environments across Fort St. John and surrounding project sites, gaining exposure to a variety of surveying and geomatics projects.
• Learn about and operate emerging technologies, including Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), 3D laser scanning, reality capture tools, and other advanced geomatics equipment.
• Participate in McElhanney’s industry-leading safety practices to meet and exceed client needs, ensuring that our teams "Think Safe, Work Safe, and Get Home Safe."

What You’ll Do

Practice Areas You’ll Focus On

As part of your experience, you’ll gain exposure to Land Surveying and Geomatics projects, geomatics technology, and potentially ground disturbance-related work, depending on project needs. You’ll build practical knowledge and technical skills while working on real-world projects with support from experienced team members.

• Projects: Gain exposure to field and office work, supporting project teams with data collection, calculations, plans, and related project deliverables.
• Geomatics Technology: Gain exposure to modern survey and geomatics tools, including GNSS, robotic total stations, digital levels, drones, 3D laser scanning, reality capture tools, and related data processing.
• Ground Disturbance: Where project needs allow, gain exposure to ground disturbance processes, line locating support, and One Call documentation.

What You’ll Bring

• Enrolled in a Diploma or Degree program in Geomatics
• Ability to work in a variety of outdoor settings including wilderness/backcountry environments for extended periods with varied hours.
• A willingness and ability to travel and work out of town.
• Ability to work on busy sites with varied terrain and ability to lift heavy equipment.
• Previous work experience working in outdoors environments is an asset.
• Attention to detail, good judgement and clear communication skills.
• Modern technical aptitude and an interest in advanced reality capture, GIS, geospatial, or geomatics technologies are an asset.
• Valid Class 5 Drivers License.

What Can We Offer You?

The wage range for this position is $22 - $28 per hour. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
