At this position level:

The facility mechanic position is expected to perform general maintenance tasks to maintain the building and perform preventative and corrective maintenance on building issues and support mechanical/electrical/plumbing equipment and systems as needed.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs work in accordance to established processes and response & rectification guidelines
  • Complies with all internal and external requirements including but not limited to environmental, health and safety, fire protection
  • Performs regular inspection, preventative and corrective measure to ensure facility uptime objectives are met, uninterrupted client operation and asset integrity of assigned facility are maintained.
  • Provides observations about facility, facility mechanical and electrical equipment and systems conditions and deficiencies and provides suggestions for enhancement and repair.
  • Monitors assigned facility by conducting facility walkthroughs, mechanical and electrical equipment and system monitoring and inspection
  • Responds to routine and on-demand service requests and performs preventative and corrective measures on facility building fabric.
  • Records resolution data within service facility management database. (QFM)
  • Ensures work completed meets quality, contract response and all other requirements
  • Receives, tracks, monitors and reports status of facility and repair work within service Facility Management Database.
  • Initiates documents to obtain formal approval of work required.
  • Works with subcontractors and perform preventative, repairs and remediation to spaces and equipment as required.
  • Recommends spare parts and supply purchases for facility equipment
  • Accurately maintains/completes all equipment logbooks and Facility records.
  • Assists in the implementation of preventative Facility (PM) program.
  • Ensures that deficiencies are identified, recorded and escalated, and that related documentations are maintained.
  • Participates in and assists with facility-related projects.
  • Ensures the manner in which work is performed is in compliance with corporate and legislated policies, procedures, practices and guidelines related to environmental, health and safety, fire protection and any other applicable requirements.
  • Maintains all assigned tools and arranges for repair and replacement where required.
  • Assists in enhancing customer satisfaction and maintaining positive relations through manner in which work is performed and services delivered.
  • Must follow BGIS Health & Safety Policies
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work requirements:

  • Must be able and willing to work flexible shifts, be available for on-call/standby and emergency callouts as they arise.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment
  • Must use hand tools, lift/carry 50 lbs., and to work on ladders/step stools.
  • Requires working extended periods on his/her feet in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must maintain an excellent attendance record
  • Ethical/responsible
  • Willing to perform other duties as requested/required by trade or knowledge base.
  • Must be result driven and work with minimal supervision

MINIMUM EDUCATION: High school completion

JOB RELATED EXPERIENCE: Minimum 3 years of working in facility maintenance and /or healthcare experience would be a strong asset.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Requires a good understanding of painting by trade, general repairs of building fabric.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and schematics specific to his/her trade, where applicable
  • Must have excellent communication skills (verbally, written).
  • Familiar with building automation systems (BAS) – Metasys knowledge is an asset
  • Must have the ability to use hand tools, lift/carry 50 lbs., and to work on ladders/step stools.
  • Scheduled evening and weekend work & 12 hours shift work is required.
  • Working knowledge of computers and handheld devices
  • Positive, professional disposition and ability to cooperate with co-workers and supervisors and to contribute productively to a project team.
  • Strong client-service orientation along with a high sense of urgency
  • Ability to succeed in a team-oriented environment under very dynamic (changing) conditions.

In addition:

  • Must meet security clearance requirements

This position (and other conditions of employment for this position) is subject to a Collective Agreement between BGIS and CUPE Local 139-1
