Please note: The closing date for this posting is Wednesday, October 30 at 4:30pm. This is a temporary (6 month), full-time contract position.

Purpose
To repair and maintain all of the County’s fleet of vehicles, equipment, and road machinery. To ensure that the fleet is kept in a good state of repair and ready for use, by utilizing a preventative fleet maintenance program.

Responsibilities

  1. Carries out the operation of repair, maintenance and servicing of county vehicles from small engine to heavy equipment.
  2. Carries out regulation safety inspections on County vehicles and ensures that machinery, equipment, trucks and other vehicles are in safe operating condition at all times.
  3. Responsible, as an employee, for occupational health & safety.
  4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
Usual hours of work are based on a forty (40) hour work week as per the Collective Agreement. Overtime may be required to meet job requirements during peak periods and the successful candidate must be willing to take part in a rotating on-call schedule during the winter season. Work takes place in shop conditions and roadside locations with exposure to heat, cold, hot machinery, oils and fumes. Heavy lifting and strenuous physical work in all types of weather conditions for extended periods of time could also be associated with this position.

Internal Working Relationships
The successful candidate will receive leadership and direction when required from the Shop Foreman and must establish and maintain good working relations with the Transportation and Paramedic Services employees including the Director, Maintenance Manager and other department staff.

External Working Relationships
The Mechanic must maintain good working relationships with the general public.

Knowledge and Skill

  1. Two (2) years equivalent College degree to obtain Automotive Service License, Truck and Coach License, Air Conditioning, Provincial Certification for ozone depletion prevention and other related courses.
  2. Five (5) years minimum experience including heavy equipment (hydraulics) and specialized equipment (i.e. gas and diesel electronic distribution systems in sanders).
  3. Have and maintain a valid driver’s license and acceptable drivers abstract.
  4. Must have good time management, leadership and communication skills.
  5. Experience in welding and cutting for fabrication of equipment.
  6. Keep up-to-date on technical repair manuals by continually upgrading to keep abreast of new technology as well as a good understanding of maintenance and construction equipment applications and materials.
  7. Working knowledge of electronic distribution systems on sanding/salting equipment and proficient in computers.
  8. Maintain shop tools and work area, perform test drives as necessary and works well in a team environment.

Impact of Error
Technical and mechanical errors as well as poorly maintained vehicles, equipment and machinery could result in costly replacements and/or repairs, accidents causing injury, death and/or lawsuits. Provincial fines could be levied for unsafe vehicles on the road and/or non-compliance to the emission testing. Organizational errors could result in financial loss and embarrassment to the County.
