Job summary

Salt Spring Literacy on Salt Spring Island is seeking an Executive Director to lead organizational priorities and advocate for literacy in the community. Working with the Board, you will guide staff, volunteers, learners and partners to promote literacy.

The role emphasizes leadership, program direction for adult and children’s literacy, and building relationships with educational institutions and funders. A part-time schedule and flexible hours are offered, with vacation and career development

Qualifications

  • 3+ years’ experience in literacy or education program delivery, workshop facilitation, training or teaching; TESL certification an asset.
  • Experience working with marginalized or vulnerable individuals preferred.
  • 2+ years’ experience in non-profit leadership in education, community or social services.
  • Experience in formal leadership, development and performance objective-setting for staff and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with the Salt Spring Island community preferred.

The Society promotes literacy on Salt Spring Island by building awareness in the community and by providing free tutor and other literacy support to adults, seniors, families and children. We subscribe to the UNESCO definition of literacy.

Salt Spring Literacy is looking for an Executive Director to provide leadership to address literacy needs and opportunities in the Salt Spring community. Working in collaboration with the Board of Directors the Executive Director role has three key focus areas:

  • Organizational leadership
  • Literacy outreach and advocacy
  • Program leadership

Organizational leadership emphasizes planning and implementation of priorities, identifying emerging opportunities and risks, and building effective and collaborative relationships with the Board, staff, volunteers, learners, and external stakeholders. Oversight of financial management, development and reporting for grant proposals, and funding activities are vital to the sustainability of the organization’s purpose and priorities.

Literacy outreach and advocacy features awareness campaigns and media engagement, along with presentations, events, and consultation with priority audiences. Building relationships with educational institutions, community agencies, government and funders, and facilitating a local Literacy Task Group will further strengthen efforts to promote literacy in the community.

Program leadership will have a primary emphasis on adult literacy programs, including planning, funding, delivery, and evaluation. The Executive Director will also have accountability for the delivery of children’s literacy programs.

We offer:

  • Part-time role with a flexible work schedule; anticipated total commitment of 24 – 32 hours/week, depending on how responsibilities are structured

What you bring:

  • For program leadership responsibilities, 3+ years’ experience in literacy or education program delivery, workshop facilitation, training, or teaching is required; TESL certification an asset
    • Experience working with marginalized or vulnerable individuals, preferred
  • For organizational leadership, 2+ years’ experience in non-profit leadership in education, community, or social services
    • Experience in formal leadership, development and performance objective-setting for staff and volunteers
  • Relevant post-secondary education or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of and experience working with the Salt Spring Island community, preferred
  • Demonstrated professional and personal skills:
    • Strong facilitation and networking; ability to adapt communication and training to different audiences
    • Results-oriented with an effective balance of independent and collaborative work
    • Cultural sensitivity, resilience, and a desire to learn
