About RJSSI

Restorative Justice Salt Spring Island (RJSSI) is a Salt Spring-based nonprofit organization with more than 25 years of experience in restorative justice, conflict resolution, and community mentoring. We work alongside individuals, families, schools, community organizations, and justice partners to respond to harm, conflict, and crime through restorative processes that promote accountability, healing, and the repair of relationships.

The Role

The Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) builds and sustains strong, trusting relationships with community partners to expand the reach and impact of restorative justice on Salt Spring Island. Working across sectors and settings, the CEC helps RJSSI respond to profound and urgent community needs by developing partnerships, creating opportunities for restorative practice, strengthening community capacity, and fostering greater understanding of restorative justice.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree or diploma in social work, criminology, restorative justice, youth work, mediation, counselling, education, community development, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of relevant education, professional experience, lived experience, and demonstrated skills will also be considered.
  • Understanding of restorative justice philosophy, principles, and processes is an asset.
  • Experience working with individuals impacted by conflict, trauma, crime, or other forms of vulnerability—especially youth.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to ethical practice.
  • Excellent communication skills—active listening, facilitation, clear written documentation, and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a small team while also managing work independently with initiative and accountability.
  • Valid British Columbia Class 5 Driver's Licence (or equivalent) with a safe driving record, and access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Police Information Check, including the Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Comfort working in a small, semi-rural community context.
Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking a grounded, compassionate, creative, empathic and relational Coordinator who can navigate complexity with care. The ideal candidate listens deeply, communicates with clarity, combines curiosity with critical reflection, and builds trusting relationships with volunteers, community members, and diverse community partners.

You may bring experience from restorative justice, social work, youth work, education, community development and activism, conflict resolution, or another related field. Equally, we welcome applicants whose lived experience has given them a meaningful, nuanced understanding of harm, accountability, healing, and repair. Beyond professional training, we value humility, emotional maturity, and the ability to create spaces where people feel heard, respected, and supported.
