Job summary

YMCA Calgary is seeking an Executive Chef for Camp Chief Hector YMCA in Exshaw, Alberta. Start date is immediate, with a salary range of $56,096–$70,120 per year. The role requires Red Seal and Food Safe certificates, plus extensive kitchen leadership experience.

Responsibilities include menu planning, team training, food safety, and budget-conscious operations. The position offers on-site work with benefits and opportunities for professional development within a supportive community

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in kitchen management or leadership roles.
  • Red Seal Certification and Food Safe certificate are required.
  • First Aid with CPR-C certification within the last 12 months is preferred.
  • Experience in training and developing kitchen teams.
  • Strong communication and excellent customer service skills.
  • Energetic, enthusiastic personality and team leadership.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word and Outlook; familiarity with ordering/menu tools.
  • Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search are required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan menus and oversee meal preparation per systems and safety regs.
  • Provide friendly, prompt customer service and maintain quality.
  • Ensure food safety and sanitary procedures across staff.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and retain staff; manage costs.
  • Ensure portion standards, minimize waste and handle allergies.
  • Oversee inventory and storage of food and supplies.
  • Lead staff development and foster a positive kitchen culture.

What qualifications are we looking for?

Qualifications include:

  • Minimum of five years’ experience working in kitchen management / leadership roles
  • Completion of a Red Seal Certification
  • Food Safe certificate
  • Experience in training and development of kitchen teams
  • Strong communication skills

  • Basic proficiency in Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Experience with different food ordering and menu planning tools
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certificated within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. Asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations: Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John's Ambulance and/or Canadian Ski Patrol
  • Clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?

Duties and Responsibilities include

Operational Excellence

  • Plan menu and oversee preparation of meals in accordance with established systems and AHS Food Safe regulations
  • Provide friendly, prompt customer service
  • Ensure a high level of quality, cleanliness and safety in all food preparation
  • Ensure food safety and that all staff follow safe food handling and sanitary procedures
  • Interact and provide service to children, families, and other guests
  • Recruit, train, supervise and retain staff
  • Plan meals, update recipes and keep food costs in line with budget
  • Ensure standardized portions are adhered to and food waste is kept to a minimum
  • Ensure all allergy and dietary needs are met
  • Ensure adequate storage of all food and supplies, and maintain inventory

Staff Development and Team Building

  • Maintain an engaged and responsive staff team by providing strong leadership and focusing on collaboration with the full camp team
  • Be an active leader in a positive kitchen culture and respectful workplace
  • Actively develop your staff team utilizing a strength-based approach and by engaging in regular conversation about their performance
  • Support Camp Chief Hector YMCA risk management rules and guidelines
  • Be an active leader within the camp team and maintain positive collaboration with other departments
  • Be part of CCH fund raising and community initiatives
