Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is hiring a heavy equipment operator at our Nova Scotia landfill. You will operate machines such as a landfill compactor, dozer, excavator, and rock truck, while following safety policies and ensuring regulatory compliance.

The role requires a high school diploma, a recognized heavy equipment course, a valid Class 3 license, and the ability to troubleshoot equipment. You will communicate with customers and co-workers and help with site maintenance and snow removal as

Qualifications

  • Perform daily maintenance checks and lubricate equipment.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to and enforce health and safety policies and procedures, using proper personal protective equipment and other safety equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with WCB safety procedures.
  • Operate heavy equipment, including landfill compactor, dozer, excavator, and rock truck.
  • Assess incoming material for disposal to determine contamination rates, determine when contamination levels are exceeded, and communicate accordingly.
  • Interact with customers (public and contract haulers), other staff, and service providers in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Shape landfill cells and add daily cover according to sequencing plans.
  • Perform daily inspection and maintenance checks of equipment, grease/lubricate equipment, check and add fluids.
  • Steer, guide, or drive the listed equipment at the assigned site using steering wheel, shifters, levers, buttons, and pedals as appropriate.
  • Clean trash and mud from tracks of heavy equipment by pulling or cutting material away from tracks and gear mechanisms at least once daily or more frequently if needed.
  • Use a two‑way radio to communicate with co‑workers in the field or office regarding work activities, requirements, and priorities for the work day.
  • Maintain the appearance of the grounds and facility.
  • Attend safety and branch meetings.
  • Perform snow removal activities prior to the facility operating hours.
  • Assist with site maintenance, including small construction projects.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
  • Conform in all respects with applicable federal, provincial, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and other orders, and to all company policies, procedures, and directives from supervisors.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Completion of a recognized heavy equipment course.
  • Valid Class 3 driver’s license.
  • Mechanically inclined with the capability of troubleshooting when issues arise with site equipment.
  • Ability to obtain Landfill Operations Certification if needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Self‑motivated and a reliable team player.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under little supervision.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to problems involving several variables in a standardized setting.
  • Proficiency with basic math functions and ability to read and understand equipment gauges.
  • Must read, speak, understand, and write the English language.
Physical and Mental Demands
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, taste, and smell.
  • Visual requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to frequently lift/push/pull up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions
  • Constantly exposed to loud noise, humidity, outdoor weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Work in outdoor environment inside a heavy equipment covered cab, but exposed to all weather conditions except lightning storms.
  • Occasionally work in high precarious places.
  • Work in outdoor environment 100% of the time.
