Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. in Stellarton, Canada, is seeking a Waste & Recycling Helper to support a driver on residential and commercial routes, collect solid waste, and operate truck equipment while adhering to safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Collect solid waste, organic, and recyclable materials from customer premises or curbside; load materials into the truck compartments.
  • Safely operate hydraulic compaction equipment and mechanism controls on the truck.
  • Coordinate with driver and route supervisor to follow route standards and improve efficiency.
  • Sort materials into designated compartments; assist with sorting, cleaning carts, managing pallets/containers, and operating warehouse compactors as needed.

Job description

The Waste & Recycling Helper plays a vital role in keeping our communities clean and safe. Working alongside a driver, you will be responsible for collecting solid waste and recyclable materials from residential and commercial routes, operating truck compaction equipment, and ensuring strict adherence to safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collection & Loading: Collect solid waste, organic, and recyclable materials from customer premises or curbside; load materials into the rear/side compartments of the vehicle.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operate hydraulic compaction equipment and mechanism controls on the truck.
  • Route Efficiency: Work with the driver and route supervisor to follow predetermined route standards and suggest efficiency improvements.
  • Sorting & Material Handling: Sort materials into designated compartments as required; assist with sorting, cleaning carts, managing pallets/containers, and operating warehouse compactors as needed.
Vehicle & Driver Support
  • Driver Assistance: Direct the driver during backing maneuvers and tight-space navigation to ensure safe vehicle operation.
  • Pre-Route Audits: Verify the truck is equipped with necessary tools (e.g., broom, shovel, spill kits) prior to departing the branch.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Assist the driver in keeping the interior cab and exterior of the vehicle clean and well-maintained.
Safety, Compliance & Quality
  • Safety Protocols: Strictly follow all personal, vehicle, and equipment safety checks. Comply with federal, state/provincial, local, and company safety rules.
  • PPE Adherence: Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times (e.g., high-visibility safety vest, work boots, safety glasses, gloves).
  • Prohibited Items: Identify and tag prohibited waste items, notify the driver/supervisor, and remove non-compliant items from carts or cans.
  • Meetings & Continuous Improvement: Actively participate in mandatory branch and safety meetings.
Customer & Professional Service
  • Professional Representation: Maintain a professional demeanor and positive attitude when interacting with customers and the public.
  • Issue Reporting: Immediately report customer concerns, damaged equipment, or route obstacles to the driver or supervisor.
  • General Support: Perform other operational duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred, but not required.
  • Experience: 1–3 months of related experience (labor, route assistance, or waste management) preferred, but not required.
  • Driver's License: Valid driver's license is a plus, but not required.
  • Safety Compliance: Must meet all company criteria for performing safety-sensitive functions, including passing applicable background/drug screenings.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with team members and the public.
  • Ability to understand and execute instructions with limited supervision.
  • Capability to learn and safely operate truck mechanisms and route tools.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
  • Physical Activity: Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, and balancing throughout the shift.
  • Manual Lifting: Ability to manually lift and carry up to 65 lbs regularly.
  • Team Lifting: Ability to push, pull, or move up to 100 lbs with assistance.
  • Vision Capabilities: Must have good depth perception, peripheral vision, close/distance vision, and color recognition.
Work Environment
  • Outdoor Exposure: Work in an outdoor field environment up to 100% of the shift, exposed to varying weather conditions (rain, extreme heat, cold, high humidity).
  • Safety Hazards: Continuous work in motor vehicle traffic conditions, around moving mechanical parts, loud noises, dust, fumes, and potential toxic/caustic materials.
