Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. in Victoria, BC is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to safely operate and maintain equipment such as excavator, front loader, or bulldozer.

This role requires a valid Class 1 license, 2+ years of heavy equipment experience, and willingness to work outdoors at various sites in Victoria. Forklift certification and transferable certifications may be required.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class 1 Drivers License with clean abstract and air brakes endorsement.
  • Minimum 2 years operating excavators, forklift/bobcat, front-loader, baler, backhoe, track hoe, bulldozer, compactor and/or steer equipment.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Ability to obtain Transfer Station/Landfill Operations Certification if needed.
  • Must be able to frequently lift/push/pull up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment to bale and load waste or other material into trailers.
  • Perform inspection and maintenance checks of equipment daily.
  • Grease/lubricate equipment, check and add fluids daily.
  • Steer/drive listed equipment at the assigned site as required.
  • Substitute for another operator when needed.
  • Clean litter from tracks and equipment daily as needed.
  • Use two-way radio to communicate with co-workers.
  • Attend safety and branch meetings.
  • Work in outdoor environment 100% of the time.
  • Comply with laws, company policies, and directives.

Job description

GFL Environmental is looking for a Heavy Equipment Operator with a Class 1 license to join our team in Victoria, British Columbia!

As a HEO you will safely operate and/or have the ability to operate various equipment including excavator, front loader, bulldozer, or other heavy equipment and/or steer equipment to bale, load and move waste material.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate necessary equipment to bale and load waste or other material into trailers.
  • Perform inspection and maintenance checks of equipment daily.
  • Grease/lubricate equipment, check and add fluids to equipment daily
  • Operator will steer, guide and or drive the above listed equipment at the assigned site, if the equipment is used at the particular site(s) using steering wheel, shifters, levers, buttons and pedals.
  • Operator will substitute for another operator if someone is absent from the work crew or as needed/required.
  • Clean trash from tracks of heavy equipment by pulling and or cutting material away from tracks and gear mechanisms at least once daily or more if needed.
  • Operator will use a two-way radio to communicate with co-workers in the field and or office regarding work activities, Requirements: and priorities for the work day.
  • Ability to perform the four basic functions of math and to be able to read and understand the meaning of equipment gauges.
  • Maintain appearance of the grounds and facility.
  • Attend safety and branch meetings.
  • Work in outdoor environment 100% of the time.
  • Conform in all respects with applicable federal, state/provincial and local laws, regulations, ordinances and other orders and to all company policies, procedures and directives from supervisors.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Valid Class 1 Drivers License with clean abstract and air brakes endorsement.
  • Minimum 2 years operating excavators, forklift/bobcat, front-loader, baler, backhoe, track hoe, bull dozer, compactor and/or steer equipment, safety shoes and eye protection.
  • Completion of forklift certification.
  • Ability to obtain Transfer Station/Landfill Operations Certification if needed.
  • Must be able to frequently lift/push/pull up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift/push/pull up to 50 pounds.
