Environmental Field Technician – Mosquito Control Program

Duka Environmental Services Ltd. is an environmental consulting firm specializing in Integrated Pest Management with a focus on mosquito control. For over 40 years, Duka Environmental has delivered effective mosquito control services across 20+ communities, from the United States border to the Arctic Circle. By using only bacterially derived protein-based larvicides, we ensure targeted and environmentally safe mosquito control.

We are seeking physically fit, motivated individuals who thrive outdoors and are eager to develop skills that are highly transferable to careers in biology, ecology, forestry and environmental fields. Ideal candidates will enjoy working in diverse habitats under variable conditions, including wetlands, ponds, and other water bodies, while conducting surveillance, data collection, and mosquito population management.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveying, monitoring, and site mapping of mosquito development areas.
  • Use biological control products such as Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (e.g., VectoBac 200G, PCP # 18158) to manage larval mosquito populations.
  • Collect and preserve biological samples.
  • Record accurate and complete data using Excel-based software, GPS tools, and operational treatment records.
  • Maintain daily logs of activities, contacts, and observations, ensuring thorough documentation.
  • Interact with the public in a friendly, professional manner to answer inquiries and build rapport.
  • Schedule and organize daily tasks to maximize program efficiency and efficacy.
  • Operate independently, occasionally in and around helicopters, based on program location.

Field Requirements

  • A valid driver’s license (Class 5 or 7) with a reliable vehicle for fieldwork. Mileage is reimbursed at $0.50/km
  • Work outdoors under variable weather and terrain conditions.
  • Flexibility in daily work hours, including potential overtime.
  • Physical fitness to perform fieldwork.
  • Independent problem-solving ability and adaptability to changing priorities.
  • Completion of a BCMOE Pesticide Applicator Certificate before fieldwork starts. Study materials and support will be provided.

Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Basic computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physically capable of handling field tasks and able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • A reliable vehicle for work purposes (no extreme off-road driving required).

Preferred

  • Completed or in-progress of post-secondary education in biology, environmental, or related sciences.
  • Previous work experience in a physically demanding or outdoor-related field.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Wage: $22/hour for an average of 37.5 hours/week, plus 4% holiday pay.
  • Mileage reimbursement for work-related activities ($0.55/km).
  • Coverage for costs to upgrade car insurance for business use.
  • $100 reimbursement for professional vehicle cleaning at season’s end.
  • $75 Boot allowance and reimbursement for approved work-related expenses (with receipts).
  • Bi-weekly pay on the 15th and 31st of each month.

Locations and Availability

Positions are available in Victoria, Delta, Merritt, Kamloops, Kelowna, Vernon, Salmon Arm, Prince George, and Yukon. Work starts as early as mid-April and runs through mid-August. Applicants should specify their preferred locations.
