Overview

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Policy Planning, the Environmental Planner I is responsible for providing environmental review of development applications and infrastructure projects and assesses. Interprets and determines conformity with current Federal, Provincial, Municipal and other regulatory agency legislation and policies.

Qualifications and Experience
  • University degree in Planning, Geography, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies, Ecology, or a suitable equivalent.
  • Minimum one (1) year of environmental planning experience. Environmental Planning experience in a municipal planning, environmental consulting and/or a related field is preferred.
  • Eligibility for, or membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners/Ontario Professional Planners Institute and designated (or working towards) a Registered Professional Planner (RPP) designation.
  • Ability to understand and interpret Ontario's Provincial legislative planning regime including the Planning Act, Provincial Planning Statement, Greenbelt Plan, Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, and Municipal Official Plans and any other applicable Plans, Acts, Statues or Laws.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, surveys, and materials submitted in support of applications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, staff, developers, elected officials.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Well-developed research skills, critical judgement, analytical thinking skills, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced, high volume, politically sensitive work environment.
  • Knowledgeable with various information systems such as GIS; proficiency and application in utilizing computer equipment and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrated ability in the City’s core competencies and relevant functional competencies.
  • A valid Ontario "G" Class driver's license, in good standing, with access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use.
