Role and Facility Information

The emergency departments of Providence Health (St. Paul’s Hospital [SPH] and Mount St. Joseph’s Hospital [MSJ]) are seeking emergency physicians to join our collegial group. Part-time as well as full-time work opportunities are available. Locums are also welcome to apply.

Vancouver is an internationally recognized city with beautiful scenery and year-round access to outdoor activities. This is an ideal location for those wishing to enjoy a rewarding medical career as well as a fulfilling lifestyle.

Our supportive group of approximately 50 emergency physicians provides emergency medicine care at both SPH and MSJ. We have an excellent relationship with our consulting services and have been recognized nationally for the quality of care provided to our patients. Our group prides itself on being innovative and exploring new models of patient care.

Many of the physicians in the group enjoy having a blended clinical practice of both EM and non-EM interests. These include Palliative Care, Addictions Medicine, Critical Care, Education, PoCUS, Prehospital and Transport Medicine, Ethics, Aeronautics, CQI, and Rural outreach. We welcome new members with novel skillsets or interests to build our department.

Our internationally recognized clinician-scientists produce landmark research in areas such as cardiovascular emergencies, mental health, infectious diseases, and substance use. The research group publishes over 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts annually and supervises trainees at all levels, including PhD and post-doctoral candidates. Depending on experience and interest, the department can offer partial salary support.

We are committed to medical education, training medical students and residents from various programs. SPH is the flagship training site for the University of British Columbia CCFP-EM Residency Program, the largest in the country. We have an active simulation program, regular academic rounds, and participate in regional ED rounds.

Physician wellness and career longevity are priorities, with programs such as staff mentorship, sabbaticals, leave of absence, flexible scheduling, overnight casino rotations, and senior staff scheduling options.

We seek applicants who will contribute to the diversity of our sites, following EDI principles. Candidates must have CCFP (EM), FRCPC (EM), or USA Certification in Emergency Medicine, and be eligible for licensure with CPSBC. Updated ACLS and PALS are required; ATLS or similar trauma courses are highly recommended. Competency with PoCUS is required. Priority will be given to team players with unique skillsets. Compensation is Fee-For-Service at SPH and via APP at MSJ.

A new hospital is under construction, with plans to relocate SPH in 2027, offering opportunities for innovation.

Mount St. Joseph’s Hospital is a community hospital in Vancouver, seeing approximately 45,000 patients per year. It operates from 8 am to 8 pm, with five shifts daily.
