Role and Facility Information

Come work as an Emergency Physician with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

The Squamish General Hospital Emergency Department (SGH ED) is looking for dedicated physicians to join our team. The positions will involve a mix of weekend, daytime, and night shifts. Opportunities for additional shifts will also be available. Compensation for shifts is on a fee-for-service basis through MSP, with additional funding available through the Medical On-call Availability Program (MOCAP) and the Rural Emergency Enhancement Fee (REEF). These positions may be eligible for Rural Program funding, which is adjudicated on a case-by-case basis by the Ministry of Health.

Squamish General Hospital ED services a population of 24,000 with a 13 bed emergency department. The emergency physician also cross covers the acute medical inpatient unit and an adjoining long term care facility for emergency issues. The ED has approximately 20,000 visits per year. Currently the schedule has 3 shifts per day, all single physician coverage, however, this summer we will be trialling a 4th shift with double coverage during peak hours. Lab, x-ray and ultrasound are available on site; specialist consultation and CT are available at Lions Gate Hospital, which is a 45 minute EHS transfer from Squamish Hospital. Squamish Hospital is a level 5 rural trauma center, with no general surgery or internal medicine available onsite. Anesthesia back-up is available 24 hours/day.

The ideal applicants are excellent communicators who work well within a small team of nurses, physicians and allied health practitioners, who are passionate about delivering high quality Emergency Medicine care in a rural setting, and who are committed to ongoing skill development. Squamish is a growing community with expanding health care needs; a commitment to the broader local medical community as a whole is valued. Living locally is an asset to be able to assist with urgent call-outs.

Applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC and hold a CCFP. Candidates should possess experience in Emergency Medicine in a similar setting or have completed additional training in Emergency Medicine, such as the CCFP-EM program, FRCPC Emergency Medicine, or have obtained EM certification through successful completion of the CCFP-EM examination. Equivalent enhanced skills programs, such as the Nanaimo Emergency Education Program, will also be considered. Interested candidates are invited to submit a cover letter and curriculum vitae (CV).

Preference will be given to candidates residing in the Squamish area and those with over five years of experience in rural emergency medicine.
