Job summary

Toronto Metropolitan University is seeking a Project Engineer to ensure the safety, reliability, and future-readiness of campus building systems. You will assess health and performance of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and central utilities, leading repair and upgrade projects with internal teams and external partners.

Hybdrid work location, 36.25 hours per week, and a focus on high/low voltage electrical systems, offering an opportunity to impact teaching, learning, and research

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering; P.Eng designation required; PMP certification is an asset.
  • Minimum five years of work experience in a commercial or institutional environment with extensive experience managing projects related to building systems.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Strong customer service orientation to lead a team through all phases of a project with users, consultants, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • Extensive knowledge of building systems such as HVAC, electrical distribution, plumbing, roofing, central utilities, BAS, fire system, and controls & automation.
  • Ability to provide consultation services and technical support to Capital Project group regarding planning, design, approval, construction, alteration of facilities and utilities.
  • Experience in performing building condition assessments and reporting recommendations for upgrades and replacements.
  • Expert-level knowledge in installation, operation and maintenance of building elements, building automation system programming and debugging.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the health and performance of TMU’s building systems and infrastructure to ensure compliant, safe operations.
  • Lead the planning and execution of repair, upgrade, renovation, and replacement projects.
  • Work closely with internal teams and external partners to deliver high-quality results.
  • Develop and implement preventive, deferred, and reactive maintenance plans balancing immediate needs with long-term sustainability.
  • Demonstrate risk assessment, anticipate challenges, and manage competing priorities to keep critical infrastructure running smoothly.

The team

Toronto Metropolitan University's Facilities Management and Development oversees the development, operations and maintenance of the university's buildings, facilities and grounds across four million square feet of space in 42 buildings on 27 acres of land.

The Opportunity

What keeps a university running at its best behind the scenes and around the clock? In the Project Engineer role, you’ll be at the centre of ensuring the systems that power campus life are safe, reliable, and built for the future. As a Project Engineer, you will play a critical role in assessing the health and performance of TMU’s building systems, equipment, and infrastructure ensuring they meet all applicable by-laws, codes, and regulatory standards. Your expertise will help maintain a safe, efficient, and high-performing environment for students, faculty, and staff. This particular role will focus more on high/low voltage electrical systems than other engineering fields.

Bringing strong engineering insight, you will support a wide range of facilities systems, including mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, steam, and central utilities distribution. You’ll develop and implement thoughtful, data-informed project plans that prioritize preventive, deferred, and reactive maintenance while balancing immediate needs with long-term sustainability. This particular role will focus more on high/low voltage electrical systems than other engineering fields. You will lead the planning and execution of repair, upgrade, renovation, and replacement projects, working closely with internal teams and external partners to deliver high-quality results. Your ability to assess risk, anticipate challenges, and manage competing priorities will be key to keeping critical infrastructure running smoothly.
