KONGSBERG Discovery Canada Ltd. is seeking a motivated Electronics Engineering Co-op Student to support the development, testing, and validation of electronic systems used in advanced sonar products.

Reporting to the Hardware Manager, you will gain hands-on experience across electronics, software, mechanical, and systems engineering, performing prototype assembly, testing, and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering degree program.
  • Completed third or fourth year of study and eligible for a co-op work term.
  • Understanding of analog and digital electronics fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with electronic test equipment and laboratory practices.
  • Ability to read schematics and technical documentation.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and basic engineering documentation practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in assembly, modification, and testing of electronic prototypes and development hardware.
  • Perform functional, integration, environmental, and performance testing of subsystems and sonar products.
  • Support circuit board bring-up, debugging, and validation activities.
  • Assist engineers with hardware troubleshooting and root cause analysis of design and production issues.
  • Operate laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators.
  • Collect, analyze, and document test results and engineering data.
  • Support design verification and validation activities for new products and product enhancements.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Hardware Manager, the Electronics Engineering Co-op Student will support the development, integration, testing, and validation of electronic systems used in advanced sonar products. This position provides hands-on experience working alongside experienced electrical, software, mechanical, and systems engineers throughout the product development lifecycle.

The successful candidate will assist with prototype assembly, electronics testing, hardware troubleshooting, documentation, and engineering support activities while gaining exposure to real-world product development and manufacturing environments.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in the assembly, modification, and testing of electronic prototypes and development hardware.
  • Perform functional, integration, environmental, and performance testing of electronic subsystems and sonar products.
  • Support circuit board bring-up, debugging, and validation activities.
  • Assist engineers with hardware troubleshooting and root cause analysis of design and production issues.
  • Operate laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators.
  • Collect, analyze, and document test results and engineering data.
  • Support design verification and validation activities for new products and product enhancements.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation, test procedures, assembly instructions, and reports.
  • Assist with component evaluation, parts selection, and prototype procurement activities.
  • Support engineering change orders (ECOs), configuration management, and documentation updates.
  • Collaborate with production personnel to support prototype builds and manufacturing investigations.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Currently enrolled in an Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering degree program.
  • Completed third or fourth year of study and eligible for a co-op work term.

  • Familiarity with electronic test equipment and laboratory practices.
  • Ability to read schematics and technical documentation.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • High level of energy, enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to learn.
PREFERRED SKILLS
  • Experience assembling and testing electronic circuits or embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, KiCad, or equivalent.
  • Basic programming experience using Python, C, C++, or scripting languages.
  • Experience working with microcontrollers, communication interfaces, or embedded systems.
  • Knowledge of serial communications such as RS-232, RS-485, SPI, I2C, CAN, or Ethernet.
  • Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and electronic measurement equipment.
  • Understanding of engineering documentation and version control practices.
  • Interest in sonar systems, marine technology, robotics, instrumentation, or sensor systems.
