Job summary

FortisBC in Castlegar, BC, is seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the reliable operation of our substations and assist with capital projects across hydro facilities. You will lead multi-discipline teams, prepare estimates and technical specifications, and contribute to commissioning packages while ensuring safe, cost-effective delivery.

The role requires a PE designation eligibility and a strong background in electrical power systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and eligibility for PEng with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia.
  • Experience with hydro facilities or utility environments is an asset.
  • Knowledge of control systems, power distribution, protection and controls, and generating units.

Responsibilities

  • Lead multi-discipline teams to plan, estimate, and execute capital and non-routine projects at hydro generation dams.
  • Produce estimates, schedules, installation packages, technical specifications, and evaluate technical alternatives.
  • Prepare detailed commissioning packages, in support of the FortisBC capital plan.
  • Support execution of projects, reviewing requirements and sequencing, for construction, commissioning activities.
  • Participate in engineering investigations to troubleshoot, evaluate, and provide recommendations on operational issues.
  • Assess and report safety hazards associated with maintenance of equipment.
  • Provide operational support to FortisBC internal stakeholders.
  • Provide engineering services for various aspects of generation dam design and equipment specifications.

As our Electric Engineer, you will utilize professional level engineering to support the timely, safe and cost-effective operation of FortisBC’s electrical substations.

In this role, you will:
  • Lead multi-discipline teams to plan, estimate, and execute capital and non-routine projects at hydro generation dams.
  • Produce estimates, schedules, installation packages, technical specifications, and evaluate technical alternatives.
  • Prepare detailed commissioning packages, in support of the FortisBC capital plan.
  • Support execution of projects, reviewing requirements and sequencing, for construction, commissioning activities.
  • Participate in engineering investigations to troubleshoot, evaluate, and provide recommendations on operational issues.
  • Assess and report safety hazards associated with maintenance of equipment.
  • Provide operational support to FortisBC internal stakeholders.
  • Provide engineering services for various aspects of generation dam design and equipment specifications.
In year 1, you will:
  • Familiarize and learn all about FortisBC’s standards, guidelines and practices related to this responsibility.
  • Work in the field with PMO and Operations to understand FortisBC business.
  • Build estimates and construction packages to support the multi-year project plan
  • Build a strong knowledge base to understand equipment condition base maintenance.
In year 2, you will:
  • Handle all key responsibilities independently with minimal support from a supervisor.
What it takes:
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, plus two to seven years of experience in electrical engineering. Must meet registration requirements for Professional Engineering status with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.
  • Experience in hydro facilities or a utility is considered and asset
  • Experience in project management, construction management, and project engineering.
  • Knowledge and understanding of control systems, power distribution, protection and controls, hydro generating units, and their functions within an electrical utility environment.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated filed experience, including equipment installation and commissioning.
  • General understanding of multi-disciplinary engineering and construction concepts.
  • Knowledge of PLC programming will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe work practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with various commonly used software such as MS Teams, MS Office, MS-Project, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to drive for results through planning, alignment, execution, and customer experience/responsiveness.
  • Ability to make optimal decisions through accountability, judgement, problem-solving, prudent risk-taking, market/industry awareness, and maintaining customer focus.
