Job summary

BC Hydro is seeking a Senior Level Engineer in the Transmission Lines/Substations Electrical Design team. You will perform electrical studies for new and existing transmission overhead systems and substations, and help develop engineering standards.

You will lead multidisciplinary projects, manage stakeholders, coordinate with consultants, and mentor junior staff while ensuring life-cycle cost efficiency and safe operation.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years in the electric utility industry; senior level.
  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with EGBC.
  • Bachelor’s or higher in Electrical engineering.
  • Strong leadership, communications, technical writing.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct electrical studies for design of 60–500 kV lines and substations.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards.
  • Manage medium to large projects and prepare estimates.
  • Coordinate Owner's Engineer lead roles when third parties design work.
  • Provide technical and site support during installation and commissioning.
  • Review consultants' and contractors' work for accuracy.
  • Mentor junior staff and develop engineers.

About the job:

The BC Hydro Engineering Team provides engineering expertise and support to hydroelectric facilities, high voltage transmission, substations, and distribution facilities. Engineering also provides project management, design, contract, and construction management as well as maintenance and emergency response services to the company and select external clients.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Level Engineer in the Transmission Lines/Substations Electrical Design team. These positions will be responsible for performing electrical studies for new and existing transmission overhead systems & substations and developing & maintaining engineering standards.

What you’ll do:
  • Conduct electrical studies related to the design of high voltage transmission lines including, but not limited to, grounding system design, step and touch potentials calculations, AC interference with pipelines/railways, lightning protection, electrical safety, radio interference, audible noise, and EMF analysis.
  • Work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary engineering team to design transmission lines/substations rated at 60 kV to 500 kV.
  • Develop and maintain relevant engineering standards.
  • Manage medium and large-sized projects and work packages, write technical specifications and standards, and prepare estimates.
  • Prepare, review, and sign the study reports and drawings.
  • Provide technical and site support during the installation, commissioning and maintenance phases.
  • Manage client relationships to ensure their needs are met and to work closely with stakeholders to drive innovation, find engineering solutions that add value, address competing interests at least life cycle cost, and to reach consensus.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues to determine relative priorities, assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.
  • Review the work of the consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to accepted engineering practice.
  • You may perform the Owner's Engineer Lead role on projects where some or all the engineering work is done by a third party such as an outside consultant or equipment vendor. As an Owner's Engineer Lead, you will coordinate and lead the internal review and acceptance of work designed by a third party.
  • Impart engineering knowledge and encourage the professional development of engineers as well as coaching and mentoring of junior staff is a key responsibility in this role.
What you bring:
  • Bachelor's or higher academic degree in Electrical engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.
  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C (EGBC).
  • A minimum of 8 years (Senior Engineer) experience in the electric utility industry. Candidates with fewer qualifications and/or experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for a lower level position.
  • A commitment to ongoing personal development and participation in professional societies.
  • Excellent leadership, communications, technical writing, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary project teams, preferably as the lead engineer or project engineer coordinating resources and managing relationships.

Preference will be given to candidates who have some experience and knowledge of one or more of the following:

  • Experience with applicable computer applications such as SES-CDEGS, WinIGS, EMTP-RV, and PSCAD.
  • Experience in electrical studies related to the design of grounding systems, lightning protection, insulation coordination, electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and AC interference, electrical and physical design of 12 kV to 500 kV transmission substations, covering AIS/GIS and greenfield/brownfield projects.
