Qualifications

Job description

The Senior Counsel Real Estate will support Chartwell's real estate activities including acquisitions, dispositions, leasing, development and financing of real estate assets. The position will work primarily with the real estate team and key external stakeholders but will also provide support to operations and other corporate teams.

What You'll Do

  • Provide legal oversight on commercial real estate transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, financings, and development projects.
  • Draft, negotiate, and review a wide range of real estate agreements including purchase and sale agreements, lease agreements, development agreements, and property management contracts.
  • Assist with due diligence reviews for real estate transactions and developments.
  • Provide support to legal and operations teams with legal matters that arise related to real estate and other matters at Chartwell properties.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external counsel to ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and internal policies related to real estate activities.
  • Work closely with internal finance, development, asset management and operations teams to support strategic initiatives and ensure timely execution of real estate transactions.

What You'll Bring

Experience :

  • 4+ years of post-call legal experience focused on commercial real estate law gained in private practice and / or in-house.
  • Experience in seniors housing or with a REIT is preferred.
  • Strong transactional experience, ideally including work on complex multi-property or portfolio transactions
  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario and / or Quebec bar

Education :

  • LL.B / J.D. designation from an accredited Canadian law school

Skills & Abilities :

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with legal and non-legal stakeholders.
  • Ability to assess legal risks in business context and offer practical solutions
  • Analytical ability and strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work
  • Excellent negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to work in French preferred
