Your Impact

The Program Facilitator, Youth Achievement Centre, is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating a variety of programs and services for youth aged 12-18 involved with the Youth Criminal Justice System, Child Welfare System, and at-risk youth attending the Youth Achievement Centre through the development, delivery, and evaluation of education, life skills, vocational, and recreation programs and services.

You will facilitate and participate in various activities while engaging and supervising youth in these activities to build their self-esteem, provide positive role modelling, encourage respect and responsibility, accountability of their actions, assist with rehabilitation and reintegration into the community, fulfill commitments, and to promote positive social skills.

As a member of our team, you have an understanding of the issues these youth face and you possess a genuine interest in working with youth at risk in an open, positive and trauma informed manner. You strive to promote positive change by exhibiting flexibility and creativity when teaching a variety of skills.

Who We Are Looking For

The Youth Achievement Centre is looking for a highly motivated, well organized, patient, understanding and committed individual to join our team of Program Facilitators. As a Program Facilitator, you will be responsible to provide learning opportunities and experiences to young persons in conflict with the law and at-risk youth. As a member of our team, you have an understanding of the issues marginalized youth face and you have a genuine interest in working with youth in an open, strength based, trauma and culturally informed manner. You strive to promote positive change by exhibiting authenticity, flexibility, and creativity while facilitating a variety of programs including recreation, life skills, tutoring, art, and vocational programs. This role serves to enhance the potential of our youth by providing a safe, structured, and engaging environment that promotes trust, respect, responsibility, and empowers young people to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for positive lifestyle choices.

Essential qualifications

Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the qualifications below. Selections for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

  • Social Work Degree, or degree in Child and Youth Care, Education Degree or related social science, recreation/sport sciences field degree
  • Experience developing and facilitating community-based recreation for youth including the ability to facilitate a range of physical activities such as: mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, skiing, fishing, and other activities
  • Experience working with youth who may experience conduct and disruptive behaviors
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide learning opportunities to youth.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be considered. Please submit a copy of your degree and/or diploma and/or educational transcripts.

Conditions of employment

You must meet the following conditions before being hired, or within the time frame noted.

Valid Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA), Advanced First Aid Certificate, Wilderness First Aid Certificate (minimum 40-hour course in all cases) are required.

  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence
  • RCMP Vulnerable Sector Security Clearance
  • CPR Level C/Standard First Aid Certification (completed within last year)
  • TB Screening

Valid canoe certification, Bronze Cross or NLS and mountain bike experience would be considered an asset.

Job Requirements

This job requires you to perform, and/or be exposed to, the following:

  • Working indoors and outdoors as well as lifting weights of up to 50 lbs. (recreational equipment) when in recreational programs, i.e. Biking, hiking, etc
  • Evening work will be required on a regular basis as well as overnights as required for trips
  • Position may be exposed to critical, unpredictable, and highly emotionally charged case situations
  • Exposure to high-risk conflict and sensitive situations, including potential for exposure to verbally and physically aggressive behaviour
