Job description

Haisla Nation is seeking two full-time Seasonal Natural Resource Technicians / Guardian Watchmen, reporting to the Department Manager. These roles are vital for the stewardship of Haisla territory, acting as ambassadors by monitoring land and resource use, collecting environmental data, and enforcing policies. The Technicians / Guardian apply Indigenous knowledge in natural and cultural resource management and contribute to cultural revitalization and land use programs.

DUTIES :

  1. Conduct fisheries research and environmental monitoring within Haisla lands and waters.
  2. Operate field equipment, including vessels and machinery, safely and responsibly.
  3. Support Haisla Nation's natural resource strategies and initiatives.
  4. Maintain detailed records of field activities and observations.
  5. Assist with projects like fisheries, stewardship, marine conservation, and environmental research.
  6. Adhere to regulations from DFO, Coast Guard, Haisla Nation, and WCB.
  7. Follow Haisla personnel policies and manuals.
  8. Perform additional duties as assigned by HNR Managers.
  9. Complete projects such as fish surveys, habitat assessments, watershed restoration, hatchery projects, water quality sampling, community fisheries, youth and cultural programs, and maintenance tasks.

Preferred Qualifications :

  1. Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License.
  2. Grade 12 education with two years related experience; post-secondary preferred.
  3. Knowledge of salmonid identification across life stages.
  4. Certifications: SVOP, MED-A2 / 3, RROC-M or higher.
  5. Experience with marine engines, radios, GPS, and operating various boats.
  6. Willingness to work long hours, overtime, weekends, often in remote and harsh conditions.
  7. Ability to maintain scientific standards and detailed records.
  8. Skills in carpentry, fishing, or outdoor activities are advantageous.
  9. Willing to pass a criminal record check.
  10. Swiftwater Rescue certification (training provided).
