The opportunity

As a Payroll Manager, you’ll join our Finance team to support essential business functions that keep our organization running smoothly. You will oversee the efficient processing of semi-monthly and monthly payroll for over 7,000 salaried and hourly employees across Canada and manage related daily payroll operations. Your responsibilities include month-end reconciliations and coordinating reporting processes. Additionally, you will play a key role in implementing and testing new or enhanced payroll protocols and systems. The role requires extensive experience in payroll operations due to its complexity.

Your key responsibilities
  1. Monitor compliance with payroll legislation and resolve payroll and tax-related issues.
  2. Manage daily payroll activities, supervise 7 payroll staff, and conduct performance reviews.
  3. Act as a payroll technical liaison with internal departments such as HR, legal, finance, and IT.
  4. Identify needs and implement methods to improve efficiency and reduce costs, including testing new systems and procedures.
  5. Lead payroll projects and new system implementations to enhance processes.
  6. Configure payroll reports using Dayforce, create and modify spreadsheets, and analyze payroll data.
  7. Maintain payroll process documentation and establish process metrics and reporting.
  8. Ensure compliance with accounting policies and internal controls.
  9. Review vendor’s Service Organization Controls (SoC) reports and monitor payroll access and change controls.
  10. Reconcile payroll liability G/L accounts monthly and make adjustments as needed.
  11. Prepare payroll taxable benefits quarterly for staff gifts, fitness, and dues.
  12. Ensure timely submission of annual returns such as T4, T4A, Releve1, EHT, and WCB.
  13. Coordinate with government agencies and assist with audits, including CRA, RQ, and WCB.
To qualify for the role, you must have
  1. Over 10 years of payroll experience in a large professional services environment, with at least 5 years in a managerial role.
  2. Payroll CPM Certification.
  3. Experience with payroll accounting and reconciliations, and knowledge of Payroll G/L.
  4. Advanced knowledge of Ceridian Dayforce payroll system, including integration with SAP SuccessFactors and Employee Connect.
  5. Proficiency in Excel and other IT tools.
  6. Expertise in complex payroll reporting, including global salary reporting, expatriates, and inbound employees.
  7. Experience dealing with government agencies such as CRA, RQ, and Service Canada.
  8. Knowledge of source deductions (CPP, EI) and ability to balance reports, process cheque requisitions, and maintain T4 totals.
