At Alto, we are re-imagining passenger rail service on behalf of the Government of Canada! Our goal is to create a new sustainable train network that that will run faster, more frequently and more reliably between Toronto and Québec City. The Alto High Speed Rail project is Canada's largest infrastructure project in generations.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director to oversee the Operations and Rolling Stock. Please note that the candidate may be based in one of our 3 offices: Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.

The role

The Director, Operations and Rolling Stock plays a crucial role in the planning, design, operations, and maintenance of rail infrastructures and assets for the Alto High Speed Rail project. They are responsible for overseeing, defining, and supporting all Operational and Rolling Stock activities related to these facilities. Reporting to the Vice President, Operations and Maintenance, the ideal candidate will have a strong background in rail operations, exceptional leadership abilities, and a proven track record of managing and delivering successful projects.

The Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Private Development Partner to develop comprehensive plans for Operations and Rolling Stock that align with project timelines and objectives.
  • Lead the lifecycle management, and performance optimization of Operations and Rolling Stock.
  • Work closely with design teams to incorporate state-of-the-art solutions into the co-development plans, focusing on passenger comfort, safety, and operational excellence.
  • Provide technical expertise in rolling stock engineering, overseeing the design and integration of modern and efficient train systems for optimal performance.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies and the Private Development Partner, to ensure successful project outcomes during the co-development phase.
  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Private Development Partner, government agencies, community stakeholders, and external partners to address concerns, resolve issues, and foster positive relationships throughout the project lifecycle.

The Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering or a related field is typically required. Additional certifications or training in project management, or rail transportation is a plus.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in rail operations and/or rolling stock engineering.
  • Excellent leadership abilities and proven track record of successfully leading large-scale projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Being fluent in both Canadian official languages are desirable.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on innovation, creativity, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
