Responsibilities

Nationally leading and globally recognized, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is a large academic health sciences centre in the heart of Toronto. The centre is internationally renowned in areas including trauma and burns, cancer, cardiovascular care, neurosciences, rehabilitation and precision diagnostics and therapeutics. Sunnybrook has earned a lasting reputation for bringing expertise and compassion to some of health care’s most complex challenges.

As the Director of Operations for the Integrated Surgical Program, you will be leading surgical and procedural activity over two primary Sunnybrook sites. This role, together with the Program Chief and Chief of Anesthesia supports the advancement of academic and clinical care for patients requiring procedural care including tertiary level surgeries/procedures. The successful incumbent will be responsible for providing multi-site strategic and operational support for a portfolio of areas with a $69M operating budget, including the Operating Room, Post Anaesthetic Care Unit, High Intensity Surgical Stay Unit, Regional Block Areas, Same Day Surgery, Surgical Short Stay Unit, Endoscopy, Colposcopy, Cystoscopy, Pre- Admissions Clinic, and the Medical Device Reprocessing Centre. The program also maintains strong relationships with partnering surgical hospitals.

The successful candidate must have extensive experience in strategic and operational planning; performance and quality management, preferably gained from working in a complex surgical environment. Ideally, the candidate should have developed these skills in the context of a large tertiary care academic health sciences centre with a busy trauma program. A critical success factor is the ability to build strong teams and be a strategic and operational partner to the Program Chief and Chief of Anaesthesia.

This role works in collaboration with Department/Program Chiefs, Medical Directors, Senior Leadership, Directors, Managers, interprofessional teams, patients and their families. The role responsibilities include clinical and financial administration, capital planning, program planning, operational planning for future partnerships and providing representation at regional and provincial meetings relevant to portfolio activity. The Operations Director will have several direct reports, including Patient Care Managers, Advanced Practice Nurses and Project Leaders.

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead the Program to identify resource needs, create care delivery processes and systems to achieve the highest quality care
  • Contribute to the Hospital’s strategic planning process by identifying priorities and implement program changes
  • Manage the program’s budget to ensure consistent with effective utilization of resources in accordance with the Program and Hospital operating plan
  • Provide leadership on hospital wide activities such as the hospital information system implementation.
  • Demonstrate innovative approaches to care delivery, acknowledging our critical role in the Ontario healthcare system
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to achieve organizational goals and objectives
Qualifications & Skills:
