Job summary

Bissell Centre is seeking a Director, Finance & Operations to lead financial stewardship, operations, and risk management. Reporting to the Co-CEO, you will oversee an annual budget of about $20M, ensure GAAP and ASNPO compliance, and drive operational excellence across all sites.

You will provide strategic guidance to the executive team and board, manage procurement, and strengthen controls while fostering a collaborative, inclusive workplace.

Qualifications

• CPA designation and financial leadership experience are required.
• Experience guiding governance, risk management, and compliance in not-for-profit or similar environments.
• Strong communication and collaboration abilities with executives, staff, and board.

Responsibilities

How You’ll Make an Impact?

Reporting to the Co-CEO, the Director, Finance & Operations is a key member of the leadership team, overseeing Bissell Centre’s financial stewardship, operational infrastructure, facilities, and risk management. This role provides strategic oversight for an annual operating budget of approximately $20M, ensuring fiscal integrity, compliance, operational excellence, and environmental sustainability across all sites.

• Executive & Board Advisory: Partner directly with the Executive Team and the Finance, Audit and Risk Management (FARM) Committee on strategic objectives, trend evaluation, and policy recommendations. Lead financial agenda items at quarterly FARM Committee meetings, coordinate external auditor selection, and serve on call for Board meetings as required.


• Accounting Integrity & Compliance: Provide overall fiscal stewardship for an annual operating budget of approximately $20M. Ensure all transactions, journal entries, accounts, and financial statements fully comply with Board policies, funder/donor designations, legal requirements, GAAP, and Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO).


• Site & Equipment Maintenance: Oversee operations, physical safety, and preventative maintenance across all owned and leased sites, including Moonlight Bay Camp at Wabamun Lake. Ensure machinery, electrical/mechanical systems, and vehicles meet health and safety standards through regular building inspections.


• Vendor & Contract Management: Oversee agency-wide procurement to drive cost savings. Negotiate vendor contracts, manage contractor relationships and project deadlines, and cultivate local supplier partnerships to secure discounts or donations.


• Enterprise Risk Management: Act as custodian of the organizational risk register and lead the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework development and maintenance with leadership.

What You’ll Bring?

• CPA Designation


• University Degree in a related field


• Degree and a minimum of 3 years experience in a senior management role. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.


• Experience in a similar position in program planning, development, case management and evaluation and supervisory skills.


• Strong written and verbal communication skills; and


• Ability to self-manage, assign and supervise accounting tasks, and work in a collaborative environment.
