Job summary

New Directions for Children, Youth, Adults, and Families is seeking caring individuals to support youth in the Youth Supported Independent Living Program. The role involves assisting youth with daily living skills, budgeting, and community integration.

Applicants must have Grade 12 or higher, relevant post-secondary education, and be able to work varied shifts including weekends and holidays. A valid driver’s license is preferred, and references will be requested.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
• Post secondary education in a related field such as Disability & Community Support; Community Support Worker; Addictions Counsellor; Certified Healthcare Aide is an asset for some positions.
• Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, mental health issues, anxiety, self-injurious behavior/suicidal ideation, FASD, Autism, behavioral challenges and/or emotional difficulties.

New Directions is a non-profit social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that provide supports in a variety of settings and foster people’s hopes and dreams in their communities. Throughout the organization, staff and leadership work in many fields and in variety of shifts to deliver quality service and supports.

The Youth Supported Independent Living Program, offers supports for youth who have develop more basic skills to live independently with supports and are interested in starting to live more independently as they continue working towards their adult life goals (i.e., work, education, relationships, self-care, life in community, etc.), and solidify their independent living skills (i.e., fully manage their budget, keep up with work and education responsibilities independently, use community resources, take care of their mental and physical health, connect with significant others and community meaningfully).

Qualifications and Requirements for the Role:

• Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent
• Post secondary education in a related field: Disability & Community Support; Community Support Worker; Addictions Counsellor; Certified Healthcare Aide (is considered an asset for some unique positions)
• Previous experience working with individuals that have developmental disabilities, mental health issues, anxiety, self-injurious behavior/suicidal ideation, FASD, Autism, behavioral challenges and/or emotional difficulties
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License. Access to a vehicle would be considered an asset
• Available to work a variety of shifts on weekdays, weekends and holidays
• Able to provide three (3) references, preferably from direct supervisors
• Comfortable assisting with personal hygiene routines and activities of daily living
• Excellent problem-solving skillsDemonstrated knowledge, awareness and sensitivity to diverse cultures and traditions
• Current First Aid/CPR is considered an asset
• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training is considered an asset
• Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) is considered an asset
• An understanding of people who are marginalized

The salary for all casual positions is $17.3239 per hour to start. Eligible increases will be applied as per policy. There are no minimum hours guaranteed for this position.

The successful candidate will be subject to Criminal Record, Child/Adult Abuse Registry, and Prior Contact checks. In addition, applicants will be required to provide a copy of their Driver’s License and a current Driver’s Abstract.

Operating a vehicle is an essential duty of this role. Candidates must hold a valid, active driver's license in good standing to be eligible for hire.
